The Rational Clinical Examination: Evidence-Based Clinical Diagnosis (Jama & Archives Journals)

Every article has one good tip
It's not dense material but they are good articles. You pretty much get one tip from every article. I could probably condense what I learned it two pages but they give all of the evidence behind it.

What I was looking for
Good quality collection of the JAMA evidence guideline on the appraisal of medical literature.

Great book
This book is quite useful - it's as described. It gives the evidence for diagnosing based on physical exam. You don't waste your time on things that don't actually tell you anything, but you do know what's useful.

good
This gives study results about what exam findings actually represent disease and which are a waste of time. Great for a documentation review as well.

Will make you look fancy!
I recently was given a copy of this book. I think it will make a great resource for clerkship. It contains evidence-based info on examining for common conditions like appendicitis, ascites, COPD, PE, knee injury etc. One of my friends who is a resident told me it would make me look like an all-star. Looks to be especially useful for internal/CTU rotations.

Not what I thought it would be
I've taught physical diagnosis to med students, as well as other trainees at various levels, for almost 50 years. I thought I might want to brush up on some of the newer concepts, in which physical diagnosis findings are interpreted in a manner analogous to lab results, with such terms as sensitivity (how good a test is at picking up a disease in those who have it) and specificity (how good a test is at not "falsely accusing" the healthy. This book is exhaustive in its mathematical analyses and references, but you lose the forest for the trees. I'm sure it serves a purpose, but alas, not for me.

Superb.
For all the 21st century advances in high-tech medical diagnosis, the initial clinical examination remains the key to good medical practice. It is also relatively inexpensive, and free from adverse effects, if it is done well. Like all medical activities it should be logical and evidence-based. This book is a very worthy attempt at defining this aim; I would love to see it updated and extended in a future edition.

Great
Makes you think about how little evidence there is for certain physical exam maneuvers that are hammered into us in med school.
