Inclusion Matters!
We finally read this book last night. My son who is 9 takes a stuffed animal to school daily. He thought it was the coolest thing to read about a kid like him. Thank you.

A fascination with a toy can be a tool for learning
Pedro is a young boy who brings his toy whale to school and doesn't understand why his teacher says he's not allowed to keep it. He's crushed because he LOVES whales. His teacher relents when another teacher advises the whale makes Pedro feel safe. We see how much it helps Pedro as his teachers incorporate the whale as a symbol throughout various classes and how he keeps it in his pocket. The pictures show a young boy who becomes very happy at school. The preface of the book notes that the story is inspired by a true-life boy on the autism spectrum. It's a simple, eloquent way to show how a simple tool, in this case a toy, can make such a difference in an overall learning experience. At the end of the book the authors provide tips on taking advantage of kids' special interests to improve their classroom experiences, start discussions, and prepare for IEP (individualized education program) meetings.

Best children's book....
This book about a little boy who is new at school and needs his whale is a wonderful book. Children love and can relate to the story. The pictures are fantastic (children notice things I did not). I especially like the way he portrays the principal--as an advocate for a child. As a principal, you don't see that much in any book or media! Overall, a great book our school loves and will love for years to come.

We can all identify with Pedro!
This is a great book to use to teach kids about differences or to make the point to teachers that sometimes using a student's interests can really make the difference! Paula Kluth has written several great books for teachers; it's nice that she is sharing her thoughts with kids too. Also included are some useful ideas at the end as to how you can use the book with your classroom!

A good book to have
I use this book in my university class when teaching undergraduate students sensitivity and ways to have a positive educational influence on the schooling of young children with autism spectrum disorders. The author demonstrates to teachers how to use a child's interest in a positive way.

Great children's book and also useful for teachers
Great children's book and also useful for teachers. Heard about it at the US Milestone 2022 conference and felt it would be helpful for raising awareness.
