not just for surfing. i paddle board and walk a lot, it tracks on land and sea.
awesome watch. i use the tides and the tracking all day every day.. walking the dog, its tracks, paddling the surf, it tracks.. great tool to track where your breaks are. only drawback is the speed at which it sync up with satellites to begin your tracking... you click start tracking and wait....and wait.. until the globe stops spinning.. i can walk the dog three blocks sometimes before it locks on and i can begin tracking.

Best Watch for surfing and Exercising
Works awesome. great way to see how many waves you caught, how far you caught them, how far you paddled and how long you were out. Also works great for hiking and biking.

insanely disappointed!
I bought to use in Puerto Rico where I have a place and for the 1st to surfs, after calibrating it to that area, only counted the 1st wave of each session out of the 15+ that I caught. Meanwhile it seemed to have captured distance travelled throughout my session.Retrieved my original GPS1 version and worked fine.Rip Curl have completely effed this up! Not only did the watch not work, they have completely destroyed the reporting of your location and swell direction, maybe blame Surfline for this too. The GPS1 version would pick a surf spot very close to where I live, maybe a mile away, this gps2 version only offers me locations that are more than 10miles away! But get this, I surf N/NE/NW swells, ever since they switched from magic seaweed reporting to Surfline, both the GPS1/GPS2 watches consistently reported SE swells = LAME!!!

Watch band ripped
For the most part I’m very happy with the watch and am on my second one. The problem is the band ripped and I’d like to replace it so it’s more secure in the water. Has anyone else replaced the band, which appears to be integrated with the watch body itself.

Aesthetically great, software/firmware is lacking
Pros:- Great looking watch aesthetically - definitely could wear casually in a professional environment. Large enough that it feels premium, but not so large that it looks like a dated smart watch.- Comfortable- Feels very secure in solid surf- Great display and display layout - works well in both low and high light conditionsCons:- Having some serious trouble getting it to sync with my phone (iPhone XS Max). More often then not, the watch is prompting me to 'sync' on the display to get my local conditions. If I go in to the iOS app (*if* it recognizes the watch period) there is a sync button with the flavor text "updating satellite data", but it never resolves. Upon hitting sync, it will occasionally show that it is syncing, but more often than not nothing will happen on the phone or on the watch. Not sure if this is user error or what, I've gone through all the documentation.-A little bit of a nitpick'y thing, but the documentation says that you need 15 meters from takeoff to finish for it to register as a wave. If you surf a punchy beach break on a small day (ex. 56th @ 2-3+), you might not get 15 meters out of *any* wave, and if you do, it's still kinda a coin flip if it will register. This is a lot lot easier said than engineered, but it seems like they should be live tracking at all times, and use the accelerometer (if there is one) to measure an increase in g-force or something, to split up what is a take off and what is just paddling around. There is a pretty big discrepancy between the two in terms of acceleration.- Not sure if this would look gigantic on small wrists, I have big wrists and it's big (in the right way for me)- Charger is not really all that intuitive. I understand that a fully waterproof watch designed to be used in sandy environments can't exactly have a micro-usb port, but their current solution involves lining up two guiding pins, and several smaller pins, attached to what looks like a giant bag clip. I typically find it takes me 5-30 seconds to get it lined up and charging properly.Overall:I bought this watch to participate in the Surfline Sessions beta (as the Search GPS moves out of beta I assume many of the people reading this review will be evaluating this watch for that purpose), namely because the Apple Watch is $100+ more, loosely requires the UAT band ($50) to make sure it stays secure in large surf, and requires (for now) DawnPatrol on iOS, which is an app with payments in-app. The Apple Watch is a much bigger investment, with a much bigger potential to be damaged or lost. However, assuming that my watch isn't having issues specific to this particular device, I'm not totally sure that I can justify the price tag of $300 with this watch, even considering the above regarding the Apple Watch. I don't think it's a hardware issue, merely a software/firmware issue that could potentially be patched.I've seen what the Gen 3/4 Apple Watches can do in the way of GPS tracking, and they're quite a few paces ahead of what the Search II is able to do, although it's an outstanding effort from a surf company, which is the reason why I'm rounding up to a 3 in my rating.

Does not record waves at right time
Potential to be great. But not right now. It does not pick up the waves at the time you catch them making Surfline sessions useless
