excellent author
Good story teller. Read the book in one day. I wish there was another author with as good a style.

Lasso Yourself a Copy of This Book and Enjoy Some Time in the Old West.
Kilkenny is a loner, but he is not a man who forgets favors. So when Mort Davis, a man who saved his life years ago, asks for Kilkenny's help, he rides off to help him try to avert an impending range war. I have not read a lot of L'Amour, so when I saw "The Rider of Lost Creek" as a Kindle special, I got it - and I am glad I did. I grew up on television's westerns of the 50's, so I do enjoy that occasional western novel."The Rider of Lost Creek" depicts an impending range war with the growth of the use of barbed wire on the open range. L'Amour reveals how in the old days, people started fencing off pieces of ground for their livestock. At first no one likes the idea, but eventually more and more people did make use of the wire. This book is really more than that; it is about a mysterious evil force that seems to be playing one side against the other, and Kilkenny's friend is caught in the middle.Louis L'Amour is without a doubt a gifted story teller of the old west. I enjoy his characterization, and his plots are well crafted. His ability to create local color, his knowledge of the subject matter, his attention to detail, but mostly his ability to spin a good yarn is masterful. If you enjoy a good western or would simply like to try the genre, I would recommend his Kilkenny stories. I know I plan to read another - and soon.

really liked this first book in the series
As always Lois L’Amour gave depth to each character revealing bits at a time keeping the fast paced mystery going. Double lives, outlaws, and a range war nearly exploding. Who or which group are behind it all? Well worth the read.

Minor spoilers, though it doesn't matter
Wow what a bad book. The protagonist was right out of some cheesy movie. He was the fastest gun, he was honorable, cunning, tough. The beautiful ladies got weak in the knees, and men stopped talking when he entered a room. So corny. The story started out weak but I thought it was becoming a sort of detective, mystery story: who was the crazed killer and who was jockeying for power? Maybe this book had some redeeming aspects.Nope. All the answers were just given to him, and contained nothing interesting. His big fight with the killer never comes and even the whole "two fast gunfighters square off" never happens that way. Everything tied up way too conveniently. So many paths unexplored by the author. So why two stars instead of one? Well, there was a lot of unintentional comedy, just laughing at the ridiculousness of it, and it was short.

Very typical L'Amour adventure
Kilkenny is an interesting character. He is a typical L'Amour hero, rough and ready but with a heart and a conscience. The story had many exciting moments but there was a bit too much "fill" even though Louis can write great fill. One should not be too particular about the plot details because it is a cowboy adventure but this plot was all over the place. Not his best but none-the-less was a fun ride. Saddle up Pardner.

Steady as She Goes
I don't expect L'Amour to break the mold he's so expertly created in his western novels. Lost Creek pretty much tracks with a winning formula of a traveling loner who finds himself in the middle of a dispute and is unusually strong and fast with a gun. In this case he goes out of his way to hide his identity to avoid the attention that comes with his reputation with a gun. If you love westerns and L'Amour's work, you'll love this book. If you're looking for a "The Usual Suspects" complex page turner, this isn't it.

good cowboy adventure
As usual, L'Amour excels in the era of the cowboys with their range wars and life as it must have been like then. Interesting descriptions of the countryside and way of life building the West and the description of progress on the ranges. The story of the main hero Kilkenny is credible ,the action i.e the fist fights as well as gun battles,.A bit sad at the end but that was his character and thankfully we can follow him again later on as he gets older. All L'Amour's characters are so descriptive I enjoy imagining them acting out the story. Never hesitate to recommend L'Amour's books !

One of 3 great Kilkenny books
I am a huge Oliver Strange "Sudden" fan.In searching for another great author and hopefully a series I have read 70 Louis L'Amour books now.Over and above most of the Sackett books I think I might prefer the three books about Lance Kilkenny. This is one of them and the three follow on a bit,Also try Mountain Valley War and Kilkenny. Not much between all three and I think some of L'amour's best work.
