Wide ranging reference book
Bought as a present for my cousin who's recently gotten into history. He's very pleased with it. Anything he wants to take further he can buy a book or two to get a deeper understanding. Great reference for anyone. Good value.

Easy Access to Extensive Facts with Complementing Illustrations
I'm a 20 year old student and although my degree is in Accounting and Finance I just wanted to brush up on some knowledge about Britain because I was sick of listening to quiz shows and drawing blanks when it came to history questions! I really don't think I was taught very well about history at school because I only really remember the Henry VIII rhyme but I never knew the order of the wives, now I do along with names, dates and what happened to each of them presented in a lovely timeline at the side of the double page spread. For me the illustrations (seen on every page) complemented the detailed information well and if you don't like reading pages and pages of information then this book is definitely for you!

Brilliant Summary of our History
An absolutely brilliant book I have to say. I’d already read Jeremy Black’s, ‘History of the British Isles’ which I found quite hard going, especially the early years, where there were so many changes going on . It was hardly a fascinating or enjoyable read, more a compilation of facts. This book is totally different with its wonderful illustrations and paintings adding brilliantly to the written piece. – I really enjoyed reading this and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants an ‘overview’ of our very colourful history. It is laid out chronologically and very easy to follow.Yes, there’s a lot to get through, but there’s going to be isn’t there in over 2,000 years of history!Of course a book of this size and subject matter can only give a brief summary of events but it will encourage you to explore further certain subjects, perhaps you’d like to read more on the Romans, the Vikings, the Victorians or the Georgian Periods? It has certainly encouraged me to buy a few more books to learn even more.Having also read ‘DK’s ‘book on the ‘American Civil War ‘ I really do feel these titles cannot be beat for value, ease of reading and reading enjoyment. They are not the ultimate book on the subject as you’d need 100 volumes and 30,000 pages, but if like me, you’d like to have a decent overview on most of our history but do not want to read every last detail then this book is just perfect.

Enjoyable visual reference
I wanted a reference of key historical events from British history to accompany my enjoyment of reading historical novels and to help me put things in context. This book helps me understand the chronology of events and the characters of the time. I love the visual format of the book - usual DK high quality. I was a little disappointed the book wasn't bigger. To enjoy some of the illustrations I've been using a magnifying glass! But I am very happy with it and regularly dip into it.
