Practical Theology: Spiritual Direction from Saint Thomas Aquinas

I read this as a daily devotional and what a blessing it was! It is a tremendous presentation and explanation of the anointed writings of St. Thomas. I looked forward to it very morning!

Peter Kreeft, already established as one of the best authors on Catholicism, has with this book written his best of all. The title could not be more apt. This is Thomistic theology the reader can put to practical use. Presented in 358 bite-size "pieces of wisdom" from the Summa Theologiae, most of them only one or two pages long, each entry is thoroughly analyzed and explained ingeniously by mingling bold face words of Aquinas and regular face words of Kreeft. If you are deciding whether to purchase this book, download the sample to read in Kindle (download the free Kindle app if you don't have a Kindle reader). The sample contains the Table of Contents, listing all 358 topics, and includes in full the text of the first 17. Read them and you will know whether you want it or not. For my part, Kreeft's title page says it all: Practical Theology, Spiritual Direction from St. Thomas Aquinas, 358 Ways Your Mind Can Help You to Become a Saint. That is practical theology indeed. I studied Aquinas in college and this book taught me more, and at my own pace.

This is my first Peter Kreeft book and I must say it exceeded all of my expectations. It's well written, clear and informative and I am sure it is going to find a way to your heart like no other theology book. I can't wait to start reading the actual Summa! God bless you D. Kreeft.

Out of all of Peter Kreeft's works, this book has become my new favorite. Of course I say that most of the time whenever I finish reading one of his books. If you have a hard time understanding St. Thomas, then please let Mr. Kreeft explain it for you. Included in his explanations, you will sometimes find analogies and sometimes humor. But each subject is presented in an interesting and concise manner. I love Mr. Kreeft's insights. So many times I stop and I have to smile wondering why it is I never thought of the very thing he just stated in his book. I suppose that is why he is the theologian and I am not. Thank you Mr. Kreeft for helping me understand St. Thomas even better. You have helped me at least understand his sentence structure as well so I no longer have to scratch my head asking, "What did he just say"? The insights you will receive from this masterpiece of writing are incalculable. Wonderful job!!

This book provides insight into over 350 topics, so you can start where you like. He elaborates on the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas and adds even more. Each topic represents one page, generally, and yet he manages to add depth to the subjects.This is a terrific introduction to the material.

This book has done so much to open up my spiritual eyes and mind to the wonder and awesomeness about God and life. It is so rich and presents a fresh look on what an adventure life truly is, if we get back to reality which means ultimately being a saint. I read one passage a day a few times and it has done more to jolt my curiosity about the big questions in life and hunger for more theological depth than any book I`ve read. Thank you St. Thomas Aquinas and Peter Kreeft. I can`t recommend this book enough. It`s about the most important things in life, things we can help get right and view more clearly as a result of this excellent work. God Bless You all!

I had read the Summa many years ago when I was getting ready to graduate from HS. It was tough reading but then again I had been warned by the priests at my high school that Aquinas was one of the top theologians and most people who read the summa were in seminaries. Many years have gone by and the Post Vatican II world is a lot different from the world prior to Vatican II. I thought it was time to see how Aquinas fit into today's theology. I find that he fits in very well and anyone who takes the time and effort to read this wonderful work by Peter Kreeft will be richly rewarded.

I have not finished the book yet, as I'm reading it slowly in order to enjoy and digest it. Peter Kreeft has done it again. A superb, understandable, and yes - very practical book. I enjoyed his Summa of the Summa, but this book is practical Aquinas. If you have enjoyed Kreeft's books before, have an interest in St Thomas Aquinas' thought, or want to be introduced to either Aquinas or Kreeft, this is a great place to start.For the layman wanting to have a great but small library in theology (i.e. Me), you couldn't go wrong with this book and F J Sheeds Theology and Sanity. It makes a great theological arsenal.Thanks for your work Dr Kreeft. You are an eminently practical philosopher.

The best and practical book on Saint Thomas. Very helpful and inspiring, I would highly recommend this book by Peter Kreeft, he makes it a delight to read and helps greatly with understanding his thought and grow devotionally.

Den Antworten zu Metaphysik und Gotteslehre kann ich folgen, auch wenn sie teilweise spekulative Züge annehmen. Spekulativ bezeichne ich sie dann, wenn sie nicht mehr auf einen klaren Schriftbeweis (Offenbarung!) zurückgeführt werden können.Gross sind die Differenzen in der Lehre des Heils, angefangen in der Diskussion des freien Willens bezüglich Heil (ich stehe auf einer kompatibilistischen Position – volle Souveränität Gottes steht komplementär zur vollen Verantwortlichkeit des Menschen). Auch die Heilsaneignung ist aus meiner Sicht verschwommen (mitwirkende Gnade), damit ebenso die Frage der Heiligung (ich vertrete eine synergistische Position - aus der Kraft der Rechtfertigung geschöpfte fortlaufende Befähigung und Freude die Gebote Gottes zu halten).Der Lehre von Engeln und Dämonen wird – wie beim Aquinaten auch – eine bedeutende Rolle zugewiesen. Für mich gehört das ebenfalls in den spekulativen Bereich.
