For the money I like this knife. It seems that Taylor Brands has made some changes in the steel they use and sheath design. This particular knife used to be 440c and now it is shown to be 7Cr17 according to S&W catalogs. 7Cr17 is a Chinese 440a. My knife has no steel designation on it but has some 440c characteristics. Since it has the new style sheath it must be the 440a which is fine with me. The older sheath was heavier because of a larger hard plastic insert, metal fasteners and D ring. The newer sheath is much lighter but comes with a better pouch and molle system. I have several S&W knives with both sheath designs and I like them both for different applications. I was hoping to receive the old style with this knife.The knife and sheath arrived new and in serviceable condition. It has a sturdy feel due to the full length tang and well attached butt cap, handle and guard... nothing is loose. I do want to note that the guard is not fastened to the tang in any way but held tight by the pressure of the handle pushing it against the blade. The aluminum butt cap is firmly attached to the tang by an aluminum pin which holds it all together. The rat tang is cut at a 90 degree angle where it goes through the guard. You begin to get the picture here. This is a solid knife but if abused too much the tang can snap off at the guard... this is the weakest point.The tanto blade is a strong design with plenty of steel at the tip. There is a slight swedge at the front end of the spine but not enough to make it delicate. The grind starts at just over 50% of the width of the blade which adds to the edge strength and gives you a nice strong flat at the spine which is ideal if you need to fasten it to your bench sharpener. The grind is flat with a secondary bevel of about 25 degrees (could be more) at the cutting edge... strong, strong edge! It came utility sharp and responded well to my Lansky ceramic rod for a smooth paper cutting edge... no problem here. The sandpaper like blade coating sticks well but will wear with use. Stainless doesn't usually need to be coated but the extra protection doesn't hurt. Some question this but the main reason for the coating is to be in sync with the tactical design. The coating can be removed easily with any number of products from your hardware store.This knife was designed for tactical purposes and is a copy cat of many other famous fighting knives. If carried for this reason and medium utility use, it should last a lifetime. Some like to use it for outdoor/bushcraft activities and will chop with or baton this knife... take caution and remember the weak spot I mentioned earlier!! I would recommend light batoning and chopping only... use common sense here! You can not overcome the law of physics! I would not hammer nails or anything very hard with the aluminum butt cap/pommel. Tent pegs... yes. Why? Well, it's aluminum. You see, the purpose of this pommel design is for tactical grip. Something to keep your hand from slipping off the end when pulling the knife out of what ever you stuck it in... tanto points are made for stabbing/penetrating. The pommel can also be used as a nonlethal striker. The handle is grippy and simply designed to accommodate different tactical grips such as the reverse grip. If you have large hands you may find the grip a bit small though. There is a decent sized unsharpened part of the knife after the guard (ricasso) that you can choke up on for utility use. You will have to reach your thumb over or around the guard to rest it on the blade spine. The upper guard could be ground off to make this grip easier.The new style sheath holds the knife fine enough and has a velcro belt loop system so you don't have to remove your belt. They added a small diamond sharpener in the pouch... it works. Here is a tip if your guard or butt cap ever loosen up over time. Take some 6 pound mono-filament, color of your choice, and wedge it in between guard and rubber handle and start wrapping until tight then tie ends together. Seal the gap with black nail polish or anything else black that will do the job... be creative. I have done this to many knives... problem solved! Good luck and enjoy!

It's a great knife, contrary to the previous person's comment. Its about a 6 inch blade, it has a little hilt to protect your hand from slipping off of the grip. The grip is rubber over metal. The powder coat is kind of scratchy like sand stone, the case is alwesome, it kind of clicks into it and it has straps for your belt shoulder strap etc. it comes with a sharpener.IT IS A GOOD SHARPENER!if you know how to use it. stone sharpeners take precision and skill to use, not "your best friend who knows about knives" go get one of those hand sharpeners from walmart or cabela's for like 5 bucks. they're cheap and for the average knife user.The previous user also added that is broke when he threw it at al wall- yes hardened metals tend to do that. it wasnt meant to throw. use it for it's purpose. if it was really "unsharpenable" than you should have sent it back to S&W, hence the lifetime warranty? or did you not get to reading in school yet.I will admit the hilt has a bit of a wingle but you really gott muscle it to wiggle it. and it is due to the blade construction type, not the quality.in short, its a great, BIG knife for the price. another great Smith and wesson!one more comment to the child before that commented on this knife:Anything is able to be sharpened, you can sharpen a stick, you can sharpen a piece of metal. Hell you can make a blade out of aluminum and you couldnt sharpen a steel blade?Next time get something you can handle, like a swiss army knife

Absolutely razor sharp right out of the box. The only complaint I have is the nylon sheath. As usual with nylon sheaths, it's very finicky with the strap that holds the knife in and it gets stuck upon trying to draw the knife.

The knife itself seems really good. The holder is also solid, but probably more than I need. Its a little bulky with extra straps, I was hoping for something more car friendly. In the holder, it does not fit into the door pocket I usually use. But I like it and am keeping it.

A good fixed blade knife, from a well respected company. I have not used it much so it still has a sharp edge, nice to know in case I ever really need to use and count on it. The knife also includes the sheath which is well made, as well as a sharpening stone to keep your knife sharp nice inclusions from S&W Well worth the money.

Great knife. Quick sharpen and it's good to go. Cuts quickly. Even deterred a would be assailant
