Skips too many steps. Dont buy.
I've done very very complicated models before. I've been doing origami on/off for 10 years. This book is poorly written and skips too many steps. And yes, the paper is too thick. This would frustrate kids. This explains why I found the book at a garage sale. Do not buy.

My kids loved this!
I got this for an 11-year old and he loved it. We got him extra paper and he uses the book to repeat some of the designs, though it's much harder without the original paper.

Beautiful paper. Terrible directions.
The paper included in this kit is gorgeous. Wish I could buy just the paper. The instructions are terrible. I consider myself an intermediate folder, but I have been flummoxed by most of the designs I have tried so far. There are no diagrams, and the directions are woefully incomplete. My cockatoo is enjoying shredding all my failed attempts :)

Enjoyable and accessible, with beautiful paper.
I have to chime in because it saddens me to hear so many critical reviews of a book that I have found to be enjoyable and accessible. I am an origami novice, having made perhaps 2 models previously in my life. I was able to follow the instructions for the turtle with very satisfying results.Contrary to some other reviewers, I found the photographs of the folding steps to be helpful because I was able to use the pattern of the paper to make sure I had the correct orientation of the model by matching it to the photo. By contrast, I have found origami books that use abstract drawings for the instructions to be more difficult to follow; even the subtle shadows between folds in a photograph can help ensure that one is folding correctly. While some steps were a bit of a head scratcher, requiring a little bit of trial and error, I have always thought of origami as an activity that necessarily comes with some challenge. The patterned and textured paper is beautiful and lends a more satisfying look to the finished models.TLDR: This book has good instructions and beautiful paper; a little patience and trial and thought may be required to figure out some steps, but that is in the nature of origami, and not the fault of this book.

The paper is too thick. Origami paper isnt supposed to be so thick. The small folds are hard to do as a result.

looks good but very difficult to make.
I've got this as a gift, and couldn't make even one animal. Pictures on the book is too glossy to see the details, and the instruction is too long to read. Papers have a really nice touch and patterns but are very difficult to fold precisely. My kid (8 years old) and myself have been pretty good at origami and tried many different books for a long time, But this book just frustrates us. I don't recommend this to any beginners or young children.
