Such a beautiful book. Much has been said in reviews about the title of the book ‘Dark Ireland’ but if you read the introduction, it explains the author/photographers intention. He’s a wonderful writer, as well as photographer, as he speaks of the darkness of Ireland and how light and shadow influences his life and craft. Bought this for my Irish born mother who enjoyed it immensely!

In diesem Fotoband "Dark Ireland" sind schwarz-weiß Bilder des Fotografen Richard Fitzgerald zu sehen, die seinen Blick auf das Irland zeigen, an das er sich aus seiner Kindheit erinnert. In dem Buch finden sich Fotos zwischen 1969 und 2010, bei einigen muss man schon zwei Mal auf die Jahreszahl schauen, um es glauben zu können (ging mir z.B. so bei der Aufnahme, wo eine Familie in einem Cottage den Rosenkranz betet... 1991). Einige Bilder sehen wirklich aus, als wären sie nicht nur aus einem anderen Jahrhundert, sondern aus einer völlig anderen Welt, kaum vorstellbar, dass einige davon gerade mal 15, 20 oder 25 Jahre alt sind.Das Buch zeigt in wirklich grandiosen Aufnahmen das harte Leben der Landbevölkerung, über vielen Bildern schwebt eine regelrechte Melancholie. Und sie wirken, berühren, treffen.

I’m writing a young adult book series about Ireland in the 19th century, and got this beautiful book to get a glimpse inside of the more rural aspects and way of living. So many other photo books focus on the glory of ancient sites or nature (which is gorgeous!). I wanted a peek into the culture. Amazing find. Thank you!
