Great DVD. UNRATED, and awesome picture quality
The picture on the DVD is outstanding. Sold my DVD copy and bought the bluray. There is a sound issue on the bluray in the middle of the film, that goes on for 20 minutes. It's like an echo. No recall either. in my opinion, I'd rather my old DVD copy instead of this one. Picture quality is outstanding on the bluray, but it's also very good on the DVD. Get the DVD on this one instead

AKA: Dog Island
Humongous is no major classic, it's not a masterpiece, and it isn't the most original film ever made. However it does have a few good things going for it. It's kind of like an Anthropophagous (1980), Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981), hybrid. We'll begin with the plot...Some friends are out on a boat & find a man stranded, they bring him aboard. He tells them, that nearby is an island, inhabited by an old recluse woman, and her dogs. One of our characters (Nick) goes nuts, threatens his fellow friends/family members (and saved man) with a gun; and sails the boat right over some jagged rocks. They come ashore on the island, and find a horrifying secret. They all begin to fall prey to HUMONGOUS!Good: The film has great atmosphere and foreboding mood. The acting ranges from bad to okay. The effects aren't stellar, but are passable. One minor nitpick I have, for a hulking cannibal, our antagonist sure doesn't seem to have much of an appetite, as we never see him eat anybody. That aside everything else is fine. I like the dark tones of the sky, which adds to the atmosphere. As we see the day in the beginning go from bright & sunny, to dark and haunting.Humongous is a fun flick, that should be waded into with low expectations. It's enjoyable in it's own right.Fun Facts: Humongous is manufactured from the creators of Prom Night (1980).Film Rating: 3/5 DVD Rating: 5/5Disc Content:Main feature- with or without Katarina introductionTrailerCommentaryAlso from Scorpion- movie trailersAlternate pre-credit sequence

My brother and I loved horror flicks as children and this flick was memorable
This is nostalgic for me. My brother and I loved horror flicks as children and this flick was memorable. We grew up boating Lake Erie and visiting the islands in the shallow western basin. So couple that with our fondness for Jason and Michael this flick was right up our alley. I've been looking for this on disc for years. The DVD does not have great video or audio quality but it's serviceable. The story is better than most slasher flicks but don't expect it to be superb. Most horror movies are junk. This one is decent.

"You're sweating cold!"
I bought this DVD for purely sentimental reasons. I first saw this movie back when I was working towards a degree in photography. What impressed me most were the carefully composed scenes, especially once the characters got to the lodge on Dog Island. I hadn't seen many slasher-type horror movies up to that time so I had nothing to compare this movie to; as a standard horror movie, it was okay. As plots go, this is the usual cliché of stranding teens in a place where they are picked off one at a time (most of the slaughter is done off screen). In this film, you have to count yourself lucky that you even get to see the results. Most things are hinted at, teased through shadow and light, movement, sound. In that regard, most of the heavy lifting is done by the music score, which is very effect, all things considered. Yes, most of the action takes place at night. The `villain' is never seen in his entirety. The cast consists of two brothers, one a gun toting nut, the other a jock, a bespectacled nerd-girl for comic relief, a bad girl, and a model. They add another body, I mean stranger, to their small number later in the movie. Except for the opening salvo, a harrowing rape sequence, most of the action comes much later in the game.I like this movie not because it is especially well done, but because it struck a chord in me of unrelenting sadness, right up to the final image. To this day, I still don't get the title: Humongous. Who would name their kid that? As for being descriptive of anything in this movie, I can't say they focused on anything long enough to get its dimensions.I'm keeping it as being representative of a bygone era. That, and because I am a sucker for this type of movie.

A good 80's horror movie.
There is no denying that the 80's were the defining times for horror movies, even the bad and mediocre movies were fun to watch. "Humongous" falls in the good category. It's not very scary and it gets a little slow in the middle, but it remains entertaining throughout. A group of teens find themselves stranded on an island with no sign of help in sight. While trying to find shelter for an injured friend, the teens explore the island and end up finding an abandoned house, a house that that hides many secrets. Soon, the group realizes there is something else on the island with them...something that's angry and hungry! Scorpion Releasing has done a great job with the uncut version of "Humongous". The transfer is crisp, clear and the dark scenes have been brightened up making this the best the movie has ever looked. It's great to see these 80's cult classics finally coming to DVD. A nice addition to any horror collection.Definitely worth a watch!

Eye See You!!
Humongous! Early 80's killer mutant/beast/monster/half-man half-beast flick. This movie is just coolness wrapped in a bow! Some young adults/teens/college age (basically your usually mid-20 somethings playing younger than they are decide to check out a supposedly haunted island. When they get there they are picked off one by one by something unknown (still don't know what that thing is). The most important thing to know about this dvd is that the night scenes somewhat clearer than the VHS or bootlegs of this movie. While still not exactly clear the viewer can make out the night scenes better on dvd. I really like this movie and love anyone who loves it or will at least give it a fighting chance. Thank you Scorpion Entertainment and Katarina's Nightmare Theater for bringing this and other obscure horror movies into the fold. I look forward to all future releases from this company. 7 foot monsters ROCK!!!

Humongous (1982) Region 1 Scorpion Release
After many years of unavailability i am glad to finally own a copy of this film, thanks to scorpion releasing.A freakish killer stalks a group of stranded twenty somethings on a pretty cold looking canadian island. It's an entirely enjoyable entry into the genre from Prom Night director Paul Lynch.Featuring a capable cast ofactors, some semi-familiar faces Janit Baldwin and Joy Boushel from other cultish flicks are a welcome presence forme at least. The dvd has a reasonably good looking print taken from a best available tape master so the image is abit soft butstill a great improvement over the past vhs release. This version is also thankfully uncut. As part of The Katarina's Nightmare range there's an intro by dvd host/wrestler/quasi Caroline Munro lookalike Katarina Leigh Waters who also showsup on the commentary with Director Paul Lynch which is more ably moderated by genre writer Nathanial Thompson and well worth a listen.A few trailers for this and other titles under the Katarina range finish out the extra's.A good film and a nicely put together disc 4/5

Nothing special
This is a cheap US horror from 1982 concerning a group of teenagers who go off on a boat trip and end up stranded on remote Dog Island, where they stumble upon a deserted house, and evidence of a strange family and something not quite right about the place.Savage dogs roam the island, hence the name, and also something else is there stalking them. One of hundreds of stalker / slasher films made around this time, here we have the usual poor acting and obvious situations of peril and jeapoardy, as a hulking great retard mutant goes on a killing rampage. Not much violence in this one to be honest. Thekills are all a bit tame. There is some attempt at adding a few quirks to the plot, and some parts of this reminded me of Tower of Evil - 1972, although nowhere near as entertaining.Basic video presentation. I think this is one for fans of the film only.

Humongous Improvement.
One of a number of early 80s horror movies that centre on the consequences of rape, Humongous is often compared to Friday the 13th Part 2 and Madman because of it's hulking deformed killer. Personally, I think it's much closer in tone to Just Before Dawn, the Tourist Trap and The Beast Within. Humongous is very good at generating a sense of foreboding and panic. It's doesn't have the flat TV movie look of Lynch's more famous outing, Prom Night. In lots of ways this film feels more 70s than 80s. The picture quality of the DVD is a vast improvement on the old VHS, but it's by nature a dark looking movie. As a slasher fan it's nice to see a good print of a decent film. I just wish someone would put out a copy of Butcher Baker, the best lost slasher of them all.

Humongous
I have a copy on video and despite a couple of small deletions this is a great example of how to make 'horror' movie better by not showing all the excess gore...... more letting the imagination do the work. Like all U.S teen movies there is the quota of the really obnoxious. What makes this better is ~ guess what happens to them? good escapism.
