VOTOMS (Vertical One-man Tanks for Offense & ManeuverS) units are light and maneuverable on the battlefield, but in the hundred-year war between Gilgamesh and Balarant, they've essentially become expendable cannon fodder and pawns to be sacrificed. The right pawn in the right place can change the course of the game forever, and when VOTOMS pilot Chirico Cuvie is mysteriously transferred from his elite unit to a top secret mission behind his own side's lines, he quickly learns that something is very wrong. Betrayed and branded a traitor, Chirico finds himself on the run from both sides as he seeks to unravel the truth behind the conspiracy and learn the secret behind the beautiful woman who seems to hold the key. Universally hailed as one of the greatest anime of all time, this is the launch of ARMORED TROOPER VOTOMS!

Epic Gritty Sci-fi Mecha Adventure
I'm a big fan of Gundam, mecha, and Sunrise so I've been eyeing the Votoms series for a while but I never took the plunge until this release. I was a bit worried given how old the series is (1983) and given how much I don't like the original Gundam (1979), but Votoms has aged much better and I can say that this series is legitimately fantastic if your taste lines up with mine. It has a lot in common with Gundam: newtypes, mechs, a long war between 2 factions, and even the same sound effects. However, it's stylistically distinct. It feels noticeably more gritty, with war-ravaged settings, a more militaristic feel in general (No whiny protagonist!), and much more restricted mechs. While there are newtypes aka "Perfect Soliders", most of the mechs aka "Armored Troopers" or "AT's" are on even ground so you don't have the overpowered suits of Gundam and the like. The whole thing makes me think of Kurt Russell action-sci-fi movies like Soldier and Escape from NY. Also, if you've ever played the Armored Core or Assault Suits video games, you'll be right at home here. I can really see how Votoms inspired these and other mecha anime.Amored Trooper Votoms follows Chirico, an ex-soldier of the Gilgamesh/Melkian army as he tries to uncover the truth about the Perfect Soldiers. Him and his allies are rogues that march to their own drum outside the two warring factions that control the galaxy, with a religious society being a third party that has their own agenda. The heroes travel to 4 distinct locations throughout the series with each arc having a very unique feel. If I loved one thing about this series, it would be that it takes you on an imaginative adventure across the galaxy. The world-building is top-notch and I always felt engrossed in it, even when the story lost me a bit. Like many anime, it gets quite metaphysical at the end with talk of gods and the like but it never jumps the shark.Along with the 52 episode show, you get 6 different OVA's, retelling the series. The first 4 are an abridged version of the show, with a 1 hour long episode for each arc. I liked this a lot and feel it works on its own, though I felt Rochina's arc was hard to follow what he was doing and what side he was on. Fyana also loses too many scenes in the first half to properly build up her character and her relationship with Chirico. That said, I think it's a competent way to plow through the series in a short amount of time. The other 2 OVA episodes are a 1-episode summary of the entire story and a random compilation of character-scenes plus all the episode previews. These 2 are a complete waste, with the first being too short to even scratch the surface and the second being too random and pointless, save for one twist at the end. At least watch the 4 hour version instead of this, if not the entire series. I actually only watched the OVA's because I'm short on time right now but I will absolutely return to watch the whole series at some point and I've already ordered the OVA collection to continue through the franchise.

Classic Anime Series Made More Accessible Than Ever
Having the opportunity to so easily collect Votoms after years of trying to hunt down all of the DVD’s is incredible. Mecha anime doesn’t get much better than this! The video quality is more than acceptable for standard definition animation. I have a 55” HD television on which this series looks terrific. I suppose if you’re one of those obsessives who sits two inches from the screen and counts pixels then you might find something to gripe about. However, there is nothing wrong with the video quality which would keep this series from being watchable.Support this release, and enjoy a quality classic anime series.

Another 80's Classic Brought home!!!
I remember when this show aired (oh so long ago) and while then we only had copies lacking subtitles it was still intriguing to watch from the action and the voices! From a time before computers and CGI where hand drawn cels were the order of the day. Mech designs by Kunio Okawara that still resonate with artists today as well as a compelling story (now that we get subtitles!! yes!) with a rich and lush environment. SO Glad they are releasing the individual specials later in May! Can't get enough of this show!

Great series with a poor transfer
Recommended to me by a friend. Bought it without realizing its not actually a blu ray transfer, but somewhere between VHS and DVD quality video. As a fan of the aesthetic of anime from the 80’s I wasn’t truly disappointed by this (has a raw feel to it). Hopefully this release is successful and we get a remaster of this down the line. The series itself I’ve really enjoyed. Fun characters, good action, colorfully animated with rich sound mixing. My main complaint is no digital copies...I really don’t understand the lack of this feature in the digital age. Very silly. I gave this set four stars overall because I do find this a great series and at $35 a good value.

IT PLAYS JUST FINE!
I was a Macross fan looking for some of the best anime series of the 80s and AT VOTOMS was discovered! It is the zenith of this era,and this collection is a must have. Don't listen to the nerds whining about SD and frame rate, it looks awesome man! I can't wait for the OVA collection coming next month. If you want to have your own AT VOTOMS(Scopedog)figure check out Amazon and eBay!

Good Stuff
Surprisingly clear picture for a SD Blu-Ray. I haven’t experienced any serious performance problems thus far. And, it’s a really good show.

the only way to watch it, at this point
the visual quality of this collection is by far superior to some of the dvd collections out there. i own nearly all of the U.S. MANGA dvd's and the picture is absolute trash. in fact, it's why i purchased this blu-ray set. save your money and shelf space and get this instead. i don't think an HD version of this series even exists, so just be grateful a company out there cares enough to keep VOTOM's alive. looking forward to owning the OVA collections, too.
