Not what I needed.
I chose poorly. If you want to paint realflowers, don't buy this book. What's inside is exactly what's on the cover. It's simple broody strokes and stylized painting. I was looking for help with turning petals And painting flower with whites. I looking for anything realistic choose a different book. I tried some of the paintings and didn't find any improvement in my painting quality. Maybe it's not you. It's me. Just a bad first date.

Absolutely what I was looking for
This book is just perfect! I'm not sure why people are complaining that it doesn't teach you to paint photorealistic flowers. That's not its purpose. My main "craft" is lettering but I was wishing I could add better artistic details. I don't want to spend far more time painting than lettering; I'm just looking for patterns that clearly convey what they are (a rose; a carnation; a leaf; a seed pod) without needing to be too realistic or accurate.Expert watercolorers may want to look elsewhere, but if you're new to the hobby or not looking to do anything too high-level, this book is perfect for you! I also appreciate the basic "intro to watercolor" at the beginning with helpful exercises on dilution, blending, different brush techniques, and so on. Highly recommended!

Great resource
I am attempting to paint flowers with watercolor, and checked this book out from the library. I decided it was a worthwhile investment. After I got the book I took it to my local office supply store and had them put a spiral binding on it, cost me seven dollars. now I can lay it flat on the table for reference while painting

Great for beginning flower painters!
I’ve bought a lot of watercolor instruction books lately and this is definitely my favorite for flowers! The book starts off with paint colors and mixing. Author includes specific names/brands of paint but also encourages you to use what you have. There are some “getting used to watercolor” exercises. A few are repeats from most books (making swatches and gradients) but some exercises were new to me & look fun.Next is the section on painting specific flowers. I included the pictures of the two pages on Roses so you can see the different positions she demonstrates. I also included picture of the table of contents so you can see what specific flowers are covered. There is a small section covering leaves and foliage. The second half of the book is about making full design compositions such as painting a bouquet or a frame of flowers. These are more advanced pages once someone has learned the flower shapes.I hope the pictures help you decide if this book is for you!

Lovely clear illustrations for loose florals but tiny type
This lovely book offers good step by step instructions on painting flowers in a loose style. It's not a guide to realistic botanical painting but it is fun for an advanced beginner or intermediate watercolor hobbyist. The author advocates using pan watercolors for the lessons in the book, but if you have and know how to use tube paints this is no obstacle. She does have some idiosyncratic choices for colors - among her personal essentials are indigo and carmine red, neither of which I would expect in a begginer's palette. But every artist has favorites! The biggest downside for me, as an older reader with imperfectly corrected vision, is the very tiny type size. I had to struggle a bit to read it.Nevertheless I am enjoying the book.

Cute book, title a bit misleading
I purchased this book bc I find different watercolor painting styles unique & interesting. This particular book has a very loose style of painting. The book contains 150 pages; first 50 pages go over materials & techniques. Then Marie explains (& shows with pictures) how to paint [various stages/view points of] 6 flowers; rose, peony, carnation, dahlia, anemone, & poppy. She also shows you how to paint a few leaves & some "detail & texture" filler flowers (delphinium, hortensia, & astible). The flowers, fillers, & leaves take up 30 pages. The entire rest of the book is all floral compositions (bouquet, flower ball, circlet, pattern, etc). I enjoyed this book very much & Marie has a lovely "loose" style of painting that I just adore, but I wish there were more flowers. A much better suited title would be "DIY watercolor floral compositions" because that's really what the book focuses on- it's definitely not "flowers".

disappointed. These are good flowers to aim for?
I have been watercoloring for a few years now on a variety of subjects. Not great but I do some that I like but I have always struggled with realistic flowers. This book covers very elementary topices like selection of brushes and paint colors. Doesn't even mention Daniel Smith in which I am fully invested. OK - can't cover them all. I found these first few chapters off target and not useful but then evey author loves to tell their setup ...OK. I listen. But the key disappointment was the flowers that she drew. These were, in m opinion, for what that was worth, very abstract and simplistic design, compared to what I was aiming to achieve. S. Very disappointing given the high level of rave reviews that prompted me to buy it. Really, I want to return it though. I found very little info that actually helped me achieve more realistic and diverse floral paintings. This is why I gave it 3 stars - close but no cigar to an intermediate skill level artist. A beginner may find some good tips here. I will leave it at that. I got more out of the Bluprint online course I bought , then Craftsy.Truthfully. when I saw what the author consider a good floral painting, I was not at all interested in learning. But that is me... For what is tries to be, the author offers great explanation and tips.

Good for a beginner
Simple guidance , more or less like sharing experiences, is easy to understand. A lot of the illustrated pictures are used in this book, which I find quite helpful.

An “ over- large “ book and the photos are blurry it could be smaller with better definition . .
Just feels the book is “ over- large “ which doesn’t aid repetition - an introductory page that just teaches how much paint to put on.Otherwise it is impossible to perfect the “ water- colour “ effect .It’s a case of “ Less Is More “.

A good beginner painting book
The book is beautiful, and as a watercolour beginner, has taught me a lot about mixing colours and of course about painting flowers.
