Great Remaster!
Wow, talk about nostalgia! While playing this I felt like I relived my childhood. I played the original game so many times throughout the ages and when I heard this was coming out my excitement shot through the roof. Ok so, my thoughts on the remaster. Graphics are about what you’d expect for a PS4, colors are very vibrant, textures are decent as I only have a regular PS4. I would imagine the pro is a far better experience! Levels are beautifully designed, seeing these levels in detail made me feel like a little kid again! Reliving these levels has been great! All in all it’s about what you’d expect from a remaster, it’s important to remember that this is a solid REMASTER and not a REMAKE as there really isn't new content added. This is more for those who are looking to relive this Tim Burton-esque adventure game in HD and vivid colors. Very fun, and good for the whole family.

This game was a HUGE part of my childhood so happy they decided to do a rerelease! 😍
Like my title says this game (the original playstation game) was a HUGE part of my childhood, I loved it even my dad loved it remember we'd always take turns playing it and the other would watch just a lot of really great childhood memories ... so them rereleasing it on PS4 is AMAZEBALLS I preordered it as soon as I heard about it! 😍 Came on time, came in perfect condition, got my preorder bonus and good news is it's exactly like the original just more polished, updated controls and a few extra goodies ❤️ And it's crazy I was born in 91' so the last time I played this game I wasn't even 10 years old yet and I STILL remember everything playing really brought it all back 😊 If you've played the original I can't reccomend enough that you buy this! If you've never played it before you still should buy it just because it's an awesome game. Just keep in mind tho if you're a youngin and weren't around when games like these were out (first gen) or were too young to play that older games are a lot different then they are now, they were more challenging (playing this reminded me of that fact lol) and there's no saving (back in the day we had to use memory cards) so if you die you have to start the level again, it saves automatically but only when you start the current stage you can't do saves yourself.Thank you for rereleasing this made me a really happy girl! 😋Update 10/29: So I just entered the code for my preorder bonus, 10 Medievil avi's and I gotta say i'm kinda dissapointed with them... Only 2 are good (Dan and the wolf) but the other 8 are uuuugly ha just randoms that i'll never use, wish they would've used better characters (from all the Medievil games) maybe bosses too BUT it was free and it's cool they gave a preorder bonus so not complaining too much lol 🤷🏻♀️

Awesome PS1 Remake But Sorely Lacking Medievil 2 and Could Have Used an Easy Mode for Newcomers
I'm a gigantic fan of the Medievil series so I was thrilled that Sony decided to remake the first one here and thankfully, the result is pretty great! It's not perfect and many of its original mechanics will alienate newcomers but it's fixed many of the original's flaws while significantly updating the combat and visuals. So what is Medievil? The way I'd describe it is a mix of Gauntlet and Zelda with a Tim Burton-style Gothic-horror theme. It has fairly simplistic hack and slash combat but also a large component of exploration. You'll want to fully explore each level to find money, upgrades, keys, and more! One of its best mechanics is the chalices. These require you to kill the majority of the enemies in the level before you can pick them up, which is a great way to incentivize players to actually kill the enemies without the need for a leveling system or locking the player in arenas a la DMC. There's one in almost every level and they all give you a new weapon or at least some health or cash so you should do all of these.Where I've always felt the game goes from good to great is in its structure. The game is broken down into about 23 levels that are presented on an overworld map. After the first handful of levels, the path starts to branch out and you can play levels out of order. I've always loved this as it makes the game feel like a grand adventure and not just a sequence of levels. This is further helped by the fact that almost every single level is very unique both visually and from a gameplay standpoint. One level will have you wandering through corn-mazes fighting scarecrows while the next has you solving puzzles in a village while you avoid killing the helpless villagers. Many of the game's puzzles will require you to visit multiple levels in order to get a key to advance, which further enhances Medievil's excellent world-building and exploration. Many players will likely run to a guide at a few points but there is always a hint or two that should point you in the right direction as long as you're paying attention and being thorough. The witch talisman, for example is really easy to miss early in the game but as long as you find the level's chalice you'll also find the talisman. I was able to beat this game when I was 10 so you should be able to as well. All of what I just described is largely identical in the new version. They've kept the majority of the experience fully-intact. Every level and puzzle has been recreated here with care and love. The new visuals are simply fantastic and the game's whimsical style is fully on display here. The game isn't filled with as much black darkness as the original but this was largely a technical limitation. It's great that you can now twist the camera around and see far into the distance. The combat has seen probably the largest change from the original. It's much more weighty and responsive, and feels much more modern. The original played more like Gauntlet, and was fast and punchy and enemies had less health. Most of the weapons have been rebalanced as well. The hammer feels much less useful, which is probably good given how early you get it, though the charge attack is now useless, while the axe is now incredibly useful. All in all, I think they've done a good job modernizing the combat but I feel like it lost some of its personality in the process. I like the combat in both versions but it's ultimately a wash for me.I've seen many criticize the camera and platforming but they are both FAR better than they were in the original. I was astonished at how playable the pirate ship level has become in the new version, where it was basically unplayable in the original. I replayed the original PS1 version and Medievil 2 after finishing the remake and can confidently say that the platforming and camera are 1000% better here. Many of the frustrations you'll have with this game are down to the original level design and mechanics. I think they did a more than sufficient job at improving things, while leaving the experience intact. That said, I think a lot of the issues people are having could have been addressed with an "easy mode." Falling in a pit still takes away an entire life bottle, there are no checkpoints in levels to my knowledge, and your health carries over from level to level. I actually agree with all of these things and think the game is balanced pretty well. It is a horror-themed game after all so I think a tense survival feel is appropriate though but I think an easy mode could have addressed all these things and made the game more palatable to a larger audience. And I will admit that even as a 5+ playthrough Medievil veteran, I still needed to replay an early level once or twice to get my health back up.So why only 4 stars if I'm such a huge fan and I'm so satisfied with the remake? For one thing, is the value. You'll likely finish the game in 7-10 hours. They've added an extra soul-quest that you can start towards the end of the game. This tasks you with finding a new collectible in every level and then taking that to the spot hinted in its description. Unfortunately, this is a lazy addition that ultimately boils down to replaying every level an extra time. There's nothing interesting about it and it's purely there for achievement hunters. The original PS1 game is also included, which is a very nice touch, though it's unlikely people will immediately want to play the game again (I did!). Ultimately, I wished they had also remade and included Medievil 2 as well. It's not as good as the first one but is a worthy follow-up. This should have been relatively easy to do with the same engine and mechanics and the fact that it's not on here means it will likely never be remade. 30 dollars for a 7 hour remake just doesn't sit that well with me when Activision gave us Crash and Spyro trilogies for only 40.Anyway, though it doesn't have Medievil 2, keeps the difficulty punishing, and is not a fantastic value, I still love this game and recommend it wholeheartedly. Specifically, if you're a Nintendo fan and Tim Burton fan, you should really love what this game has to offer. Even if you're a Dark Souls fan, you may find yourself liking this game as it has a similar dark theme, sword combat, backtracking, and a punishing nature. Check it out!

Great updated version
The original game had always been in my all time top 10 favorite games. I played this many, many, many hours as a teenager. It had definitely stood the test of time. Updated graphics are great. It had an added difficulty level in some places. Yet its still just as I remember. For those of us hardcore fans it's an easy platinum within 24 hours of starting. It you're new to the game, I'm sure it will take a lot longer. Either way it's more than worth the money, especially for the bargain price of only $30 (the original was $50 new on ps1).I wish that some of the trophies were a little harder to get. Maybe a speed trophy for beating the game under 8 hours or so? Or going thru without dying/game over would be cool. The lost souls that are new to this game are an excellent addition. I just wish they had added some other extra side missions or minigames. Just to have an excuse to keep playing it.
