So cute, but it’s a very real knife
It’s a functioning knife! No doubt about it! I thought it needed to be sharpened when I first got it… nope! It’s fine! Really, don’t worry about it!In all seriousness, you’re getting exactly what you see: a KNIFE in the shape of a whale. You can use it for decorative purposes, as in, treat it like a weapon. Or if you’re an intelligent and able-bodied person, it’s a weapon and should be treated with respect. That’s all!I love it. If you’re into cute and dangerous things, I feel like a whale is a great analogy.

Great fun in high carbon cutlery
I first saw these in a Wired Magazine piece and decided it was a must have. From what I can find on Amazon, there are 5 styles in the series with the whales in different outlines. "Yoshihiro" cutlery is intended to add a Japanese notion of `happiness' in cooking. This is indeed a fun knife.Amazon doesn't spec the dimensions and I suspected it was a small knife. The actual dimensions are 6" in length and the effective grip is within the 3" curved whale tail. The material is hammered high carbon steel in a 1/8" thickness. The knife end is a 2" double sided, double grind edge making it easy to sharpen. The whale has a seriously sharp blade from the factory. It's actually a bit too small for my grip. The ergonomics fit my wife's hand perfectly. The leverage and ergonomics considered in the knife's design are impressive for the small hand. My wife loves it and that's the person I bought it for.Note: These are hard steel, not stainless steel. They are not for the dishwasher. Like an iron skillet, you need to hand wash and lightly oil to prevent rust.

Cute Whale!
It's a very cute knife, but I was less than enthused about the qualify for $50. some of the black finish rubbed off/was missing out of the box. The grind isn't super consistent & I find the steel or heat treat to be suspect because the burr is unusually persistent to remove when sharpening.

This is so cool. If you’re a knife geek, you understand. I’m looking for the perfect sheath for it.
