They don't work with normal tie wire. I think they probably need a particular type of prepared tie wire? Item broke / jammed on many occasions due to not being able to cope with tough wire.

Updated review:Well, the second one didn't make the cut either as it broke today. It lasted a bit over twice as long as the first (100 ties instead of 40), but literally didn't make it through 1 DIY residential project. Now I've got to spend the money again on something else to get me through the end of the project.To someone not familiar with rebar / masonry projects, 140 ties may sound like plenty for your basic project - trust me, it's not. These ties come in a bag of like 500 for a reason. I suspect this isn't a simple manufacturing/ QC issue as numerous other people have the same issue. It definitely seems like its improperly engineered. Spend your money elsewhere so you don't get stuck mid project like I did.Original review:I undersrand these aren't intended to be pro grade tools, but I was hoping they'd be good enough for rare use DIY. Unfortunately they're not even making it through the first project which puts them in the junk pile.First project, first day, just an hour in (maybe 40 ties?) and the black tool broke. The handle slides in and out all the way without turning at all anymore. Switched to the green (which has a hook with a shape less convenient for standard bar tie loops) and that got me through day 1 of project 1. In total, I used about 125 of the standard pre-cut rebar ties (very thin wire, very soft and pliable).Crossing my fingers it can make it through 100 more ties to at least get through the first project. Its not looking good though. The tool used to fully retract into the housing, and now the last inch or so doesnt retract into the housing anymore so I suspect its also coming apart inside.The tools were not abused or dropped (I saw that warning on another review), they're simply not built robustly enough to perform their task. If you have a project where you have enough ties to twist to warrant an automatic twister like this - spend the money on something that'll at least get you through the first project.

I AM IN THE PLASTERING BUSINESS AND IN THE COURSE OF REPAIRING OLD PLASTER HOMES, OR MAKING REPAIRS TO THEM WE GENERATE A LOT OF DIRT. RECENTLY WE STARTED TO USE SANDBAGS TO CLEAN UP THE DIRT AND WERE USING STRING TO CLOSE THE BAGS. SO I LOOKED FOR A BETTER MORE SECURE WAY TO CLOSE THE BAGS AND SAW THAT REBAR TWIST TIES HAD BEEN USED ON BAGS OF SAND FROM THE SUPPLY YARD SO DECIDED TO GIVE THEM A TRY. THEY ARE EXCELLENT BOTH THE TIE'S AND THE TOOLS FOR THIS USE.

They work. Bought them for a job that included a LOT of rebar tying and wanted to try them. Seem to be sturdy, hard plastic handles. I actually bent the straight hook over some for my application. Both have probably tied well over 1000 ties each in the couple months I have had them. For the price, can’t beat it with a stick.

It may sound silly to anyone accustomed to using this tool but to someone learning No instructions for New user is a big deal.

This mechanical tie-wire twister is a take-off from the old yankee screwdrivers that were used before cordless drills came along. It works in reverse, however. That is, you pull instead of push which makes the shank turn. Very cool invention. I also found that there is a 5" tie-wire that has eyelets which greatly helps with a faster job.

Who thinks this would be a good idea to construct these out of plastic? The first one lasted about 200 ties, then it broke. The second one lasted about 30 ties. I took them both apart, and they used cheap plastic components in the guts. Complete waste of money. When they did work they are awesome.

i bought these and thought they were small and dinky at first... the are about 12 inches long... pretty good tool to have, nice tight ties on the rebar
