Remember the crunchy Ovaltine? This is as close as it gets! I have jars of the main versions - UK, European, Swiss and US. UK & European look very similar, maybe a slight crunch, similar taste, decent stuff. UK states 8% cocoa powder, 73% barley malt. European gives no exact composition numbers. Swiss is much darker, 13% cocoa powder, but less barley malt, stronger flavor with a definite crunch, perhaps not as large crystals as the old version, but more than the others. All imported versions have barley malt as the first ingredient at 51+%. Then there is Ovaltine Chocolate Malt. Mine has some crunch, but first ingredient is sugar. Not maltose from the barley malt, but ordinary added sugar. Fermentation changes the carbs in barley to maltose, a di-saccharide - 2 sugar molecules bonded together. An exact nutritional comparison is extremely difficult because all 4 versions use different portion sizes, definitions, etc. All contain various forms of dairy products, 2nd place in the lists, except for the US version - less than the cocoa powder, but more than the beet juice coloring. The other versions list no coloring agents, Nestle does.Update - 1/17/2017: With significantly more cocoa and a tolerable price in this 4pack, I have re-ordered.

Ovomaltine
Love the Ovomaltine Swiss but way to expensive.

Real taste of Ovaltine (aka Ovomaltine)
Taste of real ovaltine (aka ovomaltine). You can never go wrong with European Ovomaltine (aka ovaltine). This version is what is distributed in the rest of Europe compared to Ovaltine original sold in U.K market. They are both manufactured in Swiss/Austria but have sightly different proportions of malt and cocoa. Ovomaltine has malt/cocoa ratio of 51%/13% hence dark color while Ovaltine original has 73%/8% malt/cocoa (light color) composition respectively. The rest of the components are similar. So if you prefer malty drink you buy the ovaltine original otherwise buy ovomaltine for chocolate flavor. Both are very good and I purchase them alternately over time. There is another version; the so-called Ovatine European formula that comes in glass jar. It is made in Thailand and does not reveal malt/cocoa proprotions on the jar. But more importantly it does not taste anything like ovaltine I grew up with. So avoid it if you can.

The real deal
I received exactly what I ordered. This was shipped from Switzerland and took several weeks to arrive. Shipping cost as much as the actual product, effectively doubling the price. Even so, worth every penny. I add a spoonful to my coffee in the morning and feel my brain wake up. I do not believe that there is anything non-pharmaceutical in the US that does that. I did not realize that I was missing anything until I noticed that it took less time to come fully awake and added clarity to my thinking. I am less tired and last a lot longer at work. No more 2 pm slump. I also sleep better.Do I recommend? Absolutely!!

Delicious!
So much better tasting and healthier than Ovaltine. I wish it was available in the supermarkets in the U.S.
