Perfect carry lens for Sony a7
When you want something light, tough, compact and 100% accurate all the time, grab this lens. It is sharp as hell for a factory kit lens, always hits focus, can be shot at very high shutter speeds and CF for sports. I shot skiing and this is a weather proof lens, so I could get down in the woods and grap aerial shots as they broke through the trees. The wide angle is perfect for landscapes and close subject, small amount of warping as expected and easily dealt with in Photoshop.could it be sharper? Yes, yes, it could be sharper but not for the price, not for the convienence. If you need the sharpest you need to carry a heavy prime and they are expensive too. Or go non auto with the Minolta Rokkor lenses as I do for portraits. But for a default slap it on and carry around side arm lens, this is the one for A7 series cameras for now. works very well with polarized filters, likes the shifted spectrum. Great piece of Sony design good for the beginner of course and very useful for a pro.Need to push it hard for Bokeh, and it is very subtle so not arty with focus. It does however make very artistic shots with HDR as it has such fast shutter and focus it can be shot sequentially by the camera with perfect alignment.

Balances nicely on a nex
I purchased this lens for several factors, one being curiosity. I use this lens with a Nex 6 and there wasn't a lot of info out there with this lens and camera. The colors are a little more vibrant and saturated than the 16-50 pz. It is a fairly sharp lens and provides nice contrast. I have installed firmware update 1.03 on my nex 6 so the phase detect works nicely, auto focus I think is just slightly less quick than the 16-50. I will be using it for video work, I like that at 28-35mm you are at f/3.5 to f/4 instead of f/5 to f/5.6 with the 16-50. The build quality is nice, it's not built like a tank but yet solid. The manual zoom is super smooth and the manual focusing is very smooth, really, quite impressed with these two areas. The focusing provides enough room for slow out of focus to in focus shots for video. If you don't have a walk around lens for your nex 6 and want one without spending a lot, this is great. You get 70mm (105mm w/ crop factor) on the long end and 28mm (42 crop) is still wide enough for most shots, then get a couple primes for your wide angles and you are set. I give it a 4.25 overall. I think this lens is a good value at full price, you do get your moneys worth but if you get it used for $300ish, this is a super value. It is bulkier than the nex kit lenses, but sometimes that isn't a bad thing.

Basically New
Bought this lens through Amazon Warehouse ( open box products/ excess items). Since it was open box I paid 200 flat. When I received it, it was in the original box. Only thing that was missing was the lens hood that came with the lens. Amazon customer support was quick to help and offered a partial refund or to return it (I kept it). Anyway, It looks brand new, only thing was that it was a bit dusty. Besides that, the lens works perfect and i recommend grabbing one ( at the right price of course).tl;dr- Lens is great for the price and was only missing one item, buy product from amazon warehouse section if possible.

Paid for a BRAND NEE lense, was sent a visiblye DIRTY USED lense!
I was sent a dirty lense! I paid almost $400 dollars for a BRAND NEW lense. This is NOT brand new! Its dirty, there were unknown particles in and around the lense. It looks as if it was sitting outside and leaf pieces are all over it. If i wanted a used lense i wouldve bought it at the renewed price of $250

affordable first lens for the Sony A7S
I use this with the Sony A7S on ISO 12800-51200, and the images clean up very well (with a bit of noise reduction in Lightroom) and provide very good prints. I use this with the A7S for average indoor lighting situations, and it works very well with my shooting style. It is half the price of f2.8 lenses and affords very acceptable image quality. Although I am a fine art photographer by trade and very picky about image quality, this lens provides affordable quality for family and indoor documentary work using available light with the A7S. The initial prints up to 8"x10" are very good in remarkably low light situations. It was initially slightly awkward for me, as the focal length adjustment turn is opposite from my usual experience with my Canon lenses, which turn opposite for focal length adjustment. This is only mentioned to warn those moving from a Canon system to this lens. Not a big deal, just a heads up.Very highly recommended as a first lens with the A7S.

Excellent Lens
Excellent image quality. Adding distance tubes gives it macro capabilities.

Disappointing
I purchased this full-frame lens for use on my Sony A6000 camera, thinking that the soft image edges cited in many reviews would not be an issue on this camera's APSC-sized sensor. I was wrong. My copy of this lens performs best around 50mm, where the image edges are good at f/11. At all other focal lengths, and aperture settings, the edges are never acceptably sharp. Good things about this lens = sharpness in the center of the image is very good, relatively small size, very light weight, quick and accurate autofocus, reasonably priced (particularly 'used', as people are selling off this kit lens left and right).
