Yes, the side is red and not black....
Like a few others I’d wished it came with a black accent rather than the red, but after using it I have no regrets and would want it in my kitchen whatever the color! The vertical handle gave me pause because I thought a horizontal one would give me more leverage and I was delighted to find that the easy to grip, slightly slanted handle was more stable and required less muscle-it was so much easier for me to use than my wavy wire shaped masher. It was much more effective in that it required vastly fewer plunges through the food and no need to chase the food around a bunch before the job was done. The red part tidily scrapes down the pot/bowl sides and the entire tool rinses off easily without trapping food in a joint that’s sure to quickly rust. This masher is built to last, keep its shape and reward with a faster, easier mash and a fuss-free cleaning. No moving parts or swivels-just solid, streamlined, but well designed features make me very glad I chose this one.I made a bean with bacon soup and where I’d have pulled out and dirtied a blender or food processor to purée or chop the cooked carrot, celery, onion, and a few of the beans to thicken the soup, I instead used my masher and got a beautiful soup with beans, bacon, and pretty carrots dotted throughout. In about 45 seconds I got better texture and a clean tool with no machine to clean. Potatoes are next!

Who Knew?
Who knew a masher could make such a difference? I certainly didn't. This masher has made the job easier and with better results. The handle length and positioning are helpful. The potatoes are more finely mashed and fluffy.

Does the job!
My previous masher feel apart...into my mashed potatoes while mashing!! What a nightmare. It was Thanksgiving and I am mashing potatoes, the masher handle pulls off, the masher is stuck in the potatoes and the plaster or whatever holding the handle and masher together all fall into the food. Disaster!!!!! I haven't used a masher for a year and decided to look for a new one. THIS one was the chosen one.RESULTS: Nicely mashed, the handle is nice and sturdy, I had to find the right way to hold the tool. Once that was figured out, it works great. I did not think I wanted that scraper, but apparently, I DO? It was nice to have ONE tool to do it all and wash ONE item.BUY Again: YesValue: Good - if it lasts!Hint: I only used this on peeled potatoes, do not know how it will do with skin on. The handle was not slippery so that is a plus for me when cooking.END of Story: I was able to save my Thanksgiving mashed potatoes, but had to throw out half.Happy Mashing!

Solid, easy to use, quick
Makes quick work of mashing potatoes. I also use it to quickly pull together avocado toast or guacamole. Has stood up well to dishwasher (at least 30 washes to date).

Great Upgrade from a Wire Style Smasher
Honestly, how do you make a review or a potato smasher sound awesome? I haven't figured it out. This works great, is super sturdy and there are a lot of thoughtful little things about it (slightly scalloped holes that help guide the food through, silicone handles, etc.) This is a great upgrade and basically the best you can get if you don't want/like an electric solution. - Best of Luck

Fluffy Mashed Potatoes with Little Effort.
I have several hand-held kitchen gadgets all supposedly designed to mash potatoes and/or other soft vegetables. My favorites are a tie between this Zyliss model and one made by OXO. If this Zyliss were coated like the OXO, then the Zyliss would win first place. The OXO is coated with a silicone product that makes it safe to use in any pot or dish you don’t want to scratch. If you are mashing in a stainless steel pot (versus an enameled interior like a Le Creuset) go for this Zyliss. If you are going to mash in an enameled interior, go with the coated OXO. This works well with all varieties of white potato as well as sweet potatoes. I haven’t used it for applesauce or anything like that yet. But think it would excel at mashing any soft food.Other features of the Zyliss that would let it rise to first place:Ergonomic handle reduces wrist strain and less pressure is needed both to grip and push tool through the food;Size and design of the food plate and holes of various sizes makes quick and easy work of mashing the food;Size and design of the food plate and holes of various sizes keeps the potatoes fluffy, eliminates lumps, and doesn’t make potatoes gluey;Easy clean up in the dishwasher.
