Great photos and illustrations
I thoroughly enjoyed the old photos, maps and illustrations of the book. It was nice to be able to see the area around the Alamo and learn how the area has changed over the years.

The Alamo - An Illustrated History by George Nelson
We didn't learn much about the Alamo in New Jersey history class. However, after reading an article about Phil Collins in Texas Monthly magazine (he is an avid Alamo artifacts collector) and learning that he highly recommended this book, I was fortunate to find a mint condition used edition from Amazon, and signed by the author!! I visited the Alamo recently and was disappointed that there wasn't much of a guide book, and didn't learn that much about the shrine. However, this book takes you back and whets your appetite to know more, to know what's around the corner so to speak. Reading Walter Lord's A Time to Stand (the author of A Night to Remember about the Titanic sinking)and googling various sites, and always referring back to the Illustrated History, makes me still want to know more and looking forward to my next visit to San Antonio.

Worth a thousand words
Illustrations, both photographs and paintings, eloquently tell the story of La Mission San AntonioDe Valero (The Alamo) filling in a lot of gaps in other better researched and written histories. An absolute necessity for any library focused on the famous mission and the history of San Antonio and Texas. My favorite part is the series of aerial view paintings of both the mission and the town of San Antonio which depict the rise and fall and resurrection of the La Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Spanish Presidio, and the grand old city.

great bird's eye view of the layout and environs of the Alamo
Very helpful for those trying to visualize the Alamo and the nearby areas, helps to "see" how the defenses were laid out and the various avenues of Santa Ana's attack. Great for the Alamo enthusiast and amateur historian! I recommend this book.

This book is excellent! I always wondered what the total history of this historic place was all about. The legends and myths are great, but this is a great historical reference with great illustrations and a full account of the buildings and place. Since I was a kid I've always read anything I could get my hands on about the Alamo and this is awesome!!
