Best Karate, Vol.6: Bassai, Kanku (Best Karate Series)

Great book

If you are devoted to becoming a black belt these series of books are for you. It has everything from 8th kyū to 3rd Dan.

As a Shotokan practitioner, this volume is indispensable for anyone wanting to learn the first two katas on the advanced list. It is easy to follow in its simplicity and highly informative in its technical instruction.

Sensei Nakayama's book is excellent. Its advantages are that the techniques are explained in full detail and they are all performed by top JKA instructors.While its a great book during Nakayama's time (and probably till the late 80's), its my humble opinion that this book is a little outdated. Many JKA masters today have improvished on some of the techniques so perhaps its more advisable to get a more up to date version by either Sensei Kanazawa or Sensei Enoeda.Having said all these, its nevertheless a book which has no equal in the world of Shotokan.

The JKA source book. Got it to review certain hand movements in Kanku Dai. Longest kata for SHotokan. Book is in great shape and took about a week to get to me. The Best series is an old series but it still holds up.

Timeless book for karate practitioners. Moves are in Japanese and English to better clarify. Excellent photos showing kata moves.

This is a fantastic series for any serious Karate students. Insofar as the Kata are concerned, the pictures, diagrams and descriptions are excellent and have really helped me with my Karate. Incidentally, if you are not a Karate student I would strongly recommend this as a sport for an individual of any age. The physical excercise and mental stress relief are unsurpassed by any other sport.

Nakayama's Best Karate was published in English in 1979, but remains the definitive guide to Shotokan Karate.Eschewing modern trends for more showy, exaggerated katas, intended to wow tournament judges, these volumes retain an old school economy of motion that older karatekas and those whose interest is more in karate as a practical fighting corpus will appreciate.Each of the kata volumes includes some written notes on the execution of each kata, well translated and clearly presented. But the bulk of the book is taken up with photographs of the proper execution. Gratifyingly, these include transitional steps that clarify many executions. There are occasional areas of ambiguity, but these are minor and leave the practitioner are small margin for imagination and interpretation.Note, however, that this volume includes only Bassai Dai and Kanku Dai. For the Sho versions of each, you'll need another book.

On ne commente plus les excellents livres de cette série. Ce sont de véritables bibles pour le karaté shotokan. En début d'ouvrage, une petite section détaille le rythme des mouvements des katas au moyen d'un système simple de symboles. Chaque kata du livre est détaillé en 40 à 50 pages grâce à de nombreuses photos de qualité en vues différentes qui permettent de distinguer toutes les nuances et subtilités du kata. Les positions des pieds sont également montrées au bas de chaque page. Il est presque possible d'apprendre les katas soi-même grâce à ces précisions. A la fin de chaque kata, quelques pages sont consacrées à quelques séquences qu'il est important de travailler en particulier et à leur signification. L'embusen (schéma de l'ensemble des axes sur lesquels se déroule le kata) est également indiqué.C'est le troisième livre de la série que j'achète et tous me servent constamment et régulièrement pour revenir sur un mouvement ou une série de mouvements. Une référence pour les karatékas de style shotokan en France mais aussi aux USA.
