Mestemacher Bread, Pumpernickel, 17.6 Oz, Pack of 12

I grew up in Germany and this bread is something I grew up with. It's still hard to find in the US, so I was more than happy to order it from Amazon. I never thought to check the reviews since I'm familiar with this bread. When I did I read horror stories about moldy and broken slices of bread. Luckily mine arrived the day after ordering in perfect condition.This is a very dense, nutrient rich bread and is not meant to be toasted. It has a nutty flavor and is great with anything from ham to tomatoes. It's not supposed to be as soft as store bought multigrain breads - you really have to chew it. It also works much better for open face sandwiches. Putting two slices together like in a regular sandwich really will give your jaws a workout.The great thing is that a whole slice of it will keep you full just about all day.This bread is cholesterol free, has only 1 gram of fat per slice and packs a whopping 11 grams of fiber in one slice. That's on top of the 4 grams of protein and the calcium, iron and potassium. So that's all good.Unfortunately it also has 270 grams of sodium. That is close to the same amount as two slices of regular white bread.This bread is best stored in the refrigerator once opened. I ordered 12 packages and they will go in the freezer for now. It easily keeps for several months in the freezer and up to two weeks in the fridge when opened, but mine very seldom lasts as long.

Brought me back to when I lived in Berlin, this bread is the real thing.I was fond of generous servings of toast every morning and I changed over to this bread with a huge improvement in how I felt a few hours after breakfast. Noticed, too, this bread really agrees with my gut. My favorite serving is with peanut butter and jam.The 12-pack is excellent value. Far better than any other bread I could find, and far healthier.Highly recommended.

Very heavy box of 12 loaves of Mestemacher Bread, Pumpernickel arrived quickly. It was in perfect condition. Economical to buy the 12 loaves at one time. My son says he does not like it at all. It might be an acquired taste. More for me. I plan to eat no more than one slice per day as part of my low carb diet, and have the rest in the freezer.

this is one of the best vollkornbrot I've ever had. delicious. went through half a package the first day!not sliced too thick or too thin, not too dense, no overpowering-rye-sourness. good amount of sunflower seeds. (it can be pretty difficult to find one you like, between all the brands and varieties of each brand)shelf stable for a loooooooooong time.absolutely perfect out of the toaster. needs cut in half to fit our toaster, but that's just fine as it results in exactly the right size for 2 open face sandwiches.

Unique flavor and texture which I very much enjoy. You get seven slices per pack, which is about 50 cents a slice when bought in large quantity like I did. I keep packs in the freezer until I am ready to use them. Goes well with butter or melted cheese

I've been ordering Mestemacher bread online via Amazon and elsewhere for a few years. I like its mix of carbs, protein and fiber and a reasonable amount of calories. However, there can be problems: One is that sometimes they come with a not-too-distant expiration date. Another is sometimes there is spoilage before that date. And a third is what happened this time: I ordered 12-packs of three versions, with the Sunflower Seed bread arriving October 5 (2023) and having an expiration date of 6-6-24. On the second and third packages I went to use 2.5 weeks later, one was fully spoiled on one end (big white area) and in the other, the top piece had a small area of mold. See photo. Just looking at the other packages, I can't see anything wrong, but I really won't know for sure until each is opened. So enjoy the bread, but watch for spoilage.
