I'll keep this short and sweet. Our 75lb Labradoodle is currently on a very strict diet for 6 weeks to determine if he has a food allergy. Needless to say he hates it, and despite his very good training and usually impeccable behavior, he has begun knocking over the garbage can to rummage for scraps when we're not home (see pic). NAUGHTY DOG!!! Obviously we can't have this going on every day so I ordered this can right away in hopes that it would put Mr. Dog in his place. I have one word for how well it works: Checkmate! This is a very big, very smart dog and he is no match for this garbage can! HOORAY! It is well built, heavy duty, well designed and the lock keeps the lid securely in place even if he knocks it over. This is our first time with a step to open can. I have always been skeptical because it seems like the step function always breaks. So far so good with this one! I think the way it's designed it will last for a very long time. The lid opens fast but shuts slow, which isn't a problem for us. You can also still open and shut it the old fashioned way with your hand which I appreciate. It looks about as elegant as a garbage can CAN look without costing a fortune. I love the wall separator feature (I don't know the technical name for it) but it's really handy in keeping it the perfect distance from our cabinetry so it has no trouble opening and closing and doesn't rub up against the wood. Another thing I LOVE is that it came with a package of sample trash bags to use! So far I really like those as well and will probably be putting them on my Amazon Subscribe and Save list! The can comes with a 5 year warranty which is AWESOME! Most importantly, this can holds a LOT of trash!! Most of the step cans I've seen in stores are little circles or squares that are way too small for our needs. I LOVE the size of this can! See side by side comparison pics to our old Sterilite can. The lock works wonders and not only keeps the dog out but my autistic 5 year old as well!I only have 2 minor complaints. The first is that it took a LOT of effort to get the lid to snap into place when I put it together for the first time, but now that it's on it is extremely secure. The second is that it's nearly impossible to lock and unlock the lid with one hand. That's a big bummer, but certainly not a deal breaker. If I could take off half a star for that I would.I never thought I would be a huge fan of a garbage can, but I can officially say that I am now! Thanks for doing it right, simplehuman! this is a great trash can unless you have a dog who figures out how to open it, so I had to fix it so he couldn't move it bychaining it to the wall, it is a good can, the best that I found & worth the money

Perfect size. Attractive. Lock is a bit stiff initially but works well and becomes easier over time. Keeps the dogs out of the trash.

Well-constructed, attractive, and durable! After 3 months this trash can has held up extremely well to everything the holidays could throw at it...or in it. The lid is sturdy and thick plastic-making it durable and easy to both open and close. The lid has a lip at the edge so it is easy to open by hand if one chooses to do so. The "stay open" feature is a huge benefit when closed-the lid fits tightly and securely. The locking feature (to keep your pets out) is also very cool-and looks good too. The textured finish (white) is easy to clean, doesn't show smudges or marks like stainless steel and is attractive fitting in easily in any kitchen. The foot mechanism is also well constructed, and I expect it to last for years. The only shortcoming of this trash can is that it does NOT fit flush against the wall or a counter's edge. It must sit off of the wall a few inches in order for the lid to open and remain open. While this doesn't affect the performance of the trash can, those with tight spaces should be aware. Overall-the absolute best trash can I've ever purchased and, at very good price. Another Simplehuman winner!
