Cheap and functional, can take a beating.
it crushes rocks, and all kinds of them..its cheaper then a mechanical one so for gold prospectors i would definitely recommend it. the weight was surprising and the construction is solid. i have crushed many different ores in it and it has pulverized them all. it is small so don't expect to put in huge chunks at a time, but if you tap off smaller chunks with your rock hammer and drop them in the pin crushes them with little effort

Good crusher
This rock crusher works really well. I have been able to crush several rocks/ quarts from 2in minus in to dust as fine 100 mesh I will be adding pads to the handle though when you are holding the handle the corner of the square tube sits right against the bone on the base of your thumb after a few good hits with it you can really feel it starting to hit the bone.

Effective but could have easily been designed better
The pros:* It works* Base plate is pretty thickThe cons:* The inside of the tube has a really thick coating that is very difficult to remove. I tried using theliquid form of Klean Strip paint stripper, for a couple of hours, and it just softened the coatingsome, it was still difficult to clean out the pipe.* The side handles are not smoothed out enough, so they are uncomcortable.* The overall mass of the plunger assembly is too light for my liking* The tubular square top handle on the plunger is a really poor idea, it is very uncomfortable.I did the math, I ordered some 28mm closed cell foam tubing (used for exercise equipment handle bars). I am going to put that on the top handle to see if it makes it less unpleasant. You can also order handle bar grips for 1.1" ID handle bars and try that as an alternative.I use this thing for crushing rocks (turquoise, carnellian...) down to particle sizes of 4mm, 2mm, 1mm, .5mm, .25mm, to dust for inlaying work. So I'm not just breaking rocks, I am pulverizing them really.Update: The pictured handle bar grips mitigate some of the discomfort associated with the square handle, these fit pretty good, just have to trim 1/2" off the open end, see "Hexagon Pattern Black Non-Slip Bike Handle Bar Grips, Designed to fit 1 ¼” Handlebars (1 Pair)"Update 2: Crushing up rock produces a lot of dust. To mitigate the mess (and to maintain your marriage), I recommend getting yourself a typical Lasko fan and a decent 20"x20" furnace filter (Merv 11 or 3M MPR15) and tape it to the intake side of the fan (see picture). This filter was bright blue/green yesterday after crushing some blue Opalina. Today, I crushed Jasper (which is brown). Even though it does not look like a lot of dust is produced from crushing the rock, there is mucho particles during crushing and pouring the crushed rock into a pan from the tube. Without this fan/filter setup, my work area (and my wife's stuff) would be covered in a layer of stone dust.

Makes crushing rocks a little easier
Trying to crush a sample of rock to see what is inside is very hard work. This makes it a little easier. Don't get me wrong, it is still hard work. But it helps keep the pieces contained and with some effort you can crush that stuff up nice and small. Much easier than a sledgehammer and a cloth. The crusher is well made and sturdy.
