Fashion not function.
I hoped that it would be a book for those with a passion for old school trainers. Instead, It reads like a glossy issue of Vogue written by those with an eye more concerned with functionless fashion.I wanted it to be like wearing a pair of Jordan IIIs and getting subtle nods of acknowledgement from those who appreciate what it means to be a collector. It’s more akin to wearing a pair of Balenciagas and being stopped by an octogenarian, decked out head-to-toe in beige and brown, who asks, “How much did those grandpa Kmart shoes cost you. I’d like to get me some”.I wanted it to be good. So very good. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all bad (the chapters on Bobbito, Bodecker and Tinker are well worth the read). But it’s nowhere near great. It coulda’ and shoulda’ been better. And ultimately, that’s the most disappointing part of all.
