Q: how many square feet would a bag cover when used in place of mulch around plants near house?

very small bag. I used mine to cover top of house plants and inside small flower vase. If you are looking to cover a large area, I would suggest a different product.

Q: Approx how many stones are in this 2 lb. bag?

maybe 30 but I did outright count. there was a good amount in the bag I received

Q: How much surface area does it cover?

Thinly covers about 12 inches by 6 inches. I bought another bag for my needs. I put them in the base of a fountain.

Q: Haven't received my rocks yet. Do these rocks have to be washed before used in small live bamboo plant holder? And if so what do I wash them with?

No need to wash them. They are clean. Just for decoration.
