highly recommended, full of insights about esports, lessons for many emerging platform businesses
William Collis has written a remarkable book. It is comprehensive and yet concise. It is informative but also presents a variety of actionable and conceptual frameworks. And it manages to do all this with a writing style that makes a research-based work of non-fiction read like an engrossing novel. Not only did I learn a lot about a high growth industry about which I knew little, I gained insights and saw parallels with several other emerging platform businesses in which I am engaged. In this relatively short book, Collis walks us through the history of not just esports but of the entire virtual gaming landscape. He recounts the past, analyzes it, and discusses possible scenarios that are likely to evolve. He presents multiple frameworks that not only provide insight into esports but can also be used in other platform-based businesses. The SCAR, BAMS, and OMEN frameworks are very useful and I'm sure I will return to them in several different contexts. Rather than shy away from superficial anomalies and contradictions in the evolution of some games and companies, Collis probes deeper to search for explanations. He shows how a game can fail even though it is technologically superior and feature rich. He shows how superior resources and investments do not necessarily lead to success. Best of all, he accomplishes all of the above and more with dry wit, terrific writing, and deep knowledge and understanding, combined with obvious love and enthusiasm for his subject. A reader cannot help but become immersed in a fascinating topic about which the author cares so much. I am sure I will read this book again and gain even more from it each time I read it, and it is a book I will recommend highly to my colleagues.

Must Read!
The book of esports is a must-read, an incredibly compelling piece of non-fiction. I know very little about competitive video games or esports. At best you might have considered me to be a curious outsider. After Collis' work, I feel I can have a seat at the table! The book is well written, endlessly engaging and truly informative. As Collis explains it, competitive video games have deep roots tracing their origins back to the pinball machines of the early 1900s. Rather than spending lots of time on history lessons, the book summarizes these using frameworks like BAMS or SCARS, which provide simple, explanatory factors to chart esports rise.Once in modern-day, Collis takes us on a whirlwind tour of how big competitive gaming has become and where it is going. Overall, The Book of Esports blew me away ;)
