Les Fleurs du Mal: The Flowers of Evil: the complete dual language edition, fully revised and updated

Amazing translations, keeps the alexandrine rhyme and meter, seems to have the truly decadent spirit in English. French originals on the left facing page of each. It has an alphabetical index in the back by title, but I'd really like one that lists them in order of page. Please make a hardback edition!edit (apr 2023): he did it! exactly what i asked for. updated preface, index and even reordered some of the poems into new slots, while losing nothing, and put it in a hardback. i've bought more than one copy for myself and others.

I've read Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal over forty times in multiple translations, him being a most beloved poet of mine along with Rimbaud and Vallejo. And I have to say, these translations by John Tidball are astounding, and my favorite. The Oxford edition attempted rhyming musicality but the images felt flat. Aggeler's translations are immensely engaging but are not as musical. A sense of force is missing in the Howard/Godine edition. While no single poem stands out, the singularity of Tidball's vision of Baudelaire comes together in its entirety. What Henry Weinfeld did for Mallarme, Tidball has done for Baudelaire. I've been carrying this collection with me everywhere ever since, reading and re-reading poems..

Haven't the had a chance to read much but the dual language edition for poetry is the best way to go. If you learn to pronounce language you get a sense of the sound and rhyme and get the sense and imagery from the translation

Book arrived in perfect condition. It had that new book smell to it. I'm a French-learner and the opposite page translations are a convenient way to help me understand the material. There's lots of margin space to take notes. I will be working through this book for the next year or so.

This is an extraordinary translation of Les Fleurs du Mal. Having read dozens of translations of Baudelaire in the process of working toward my own, I had thought it impossible to produce a rhyming, metered translation that would not descend into a parody of the original. John Tidball has succeeded in producing such a translation that is accurate (at the level of the stanza and often the line) and that does not destroy the tonal sense of Baudelaire's French.Along with Geoffrey Wagner's translation from the 1940s, which only offers a selection of the poems, I think this is the best translation of Les Fleurs du Mal in English. Though it is independently published and lacks the imprimatur of translations by Richard Howard and James McGowan, it is far superior to either in accuracy, literary quality, and as an honest rendering of Baudelaire's sensibility.An astonishing performance.

This edition has a lot of typos… If you just want to read it in English or use it to decorate your bookshelf, it’d be ok. I know II and Il are very similar… But it really bothers me, how often this happens in the book… on page 16, page 20, page 30, page 42…I love the translation. If you fix the typos, I’d love to have another copy.

The book looks great, but the translations are very weird. Honestly, I'm dissapointed with my purchase. Maybe I should've spend more time finder a version that translate's better. However, It's love to have the french left and english on the right side.

These are really excellent translations of Les Fleurs du Mal. The beauty of the original poems shines through in a way rarely seen in translation. How anyone could have awarded one star to this work is beyond comprehension. It’s wonderful to be able to compare each translation side by side with the original poem on every page. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to all lovers of fine poetry.

This edition of Baudelaire is lovely - the layout in particular, with the french and english of each poem on adjacent pages, makes for a far more enjoyable reading experience than in other bilingual versions of this text where the translations are simply the latter half of the book. The translations of the poems themselves are also lovely.Delivery was prompt, but regrettably, when my book arrived, the front cover had been folded over and crumpled in on itself due to sloppy packaging. I have managed to flatten it out, for the most part, but it's still rather an unfortunate occurrence to find one's brand new book damaged before having even had the chance to pick it up.
