Don't be fooled, not only for beginners
Pilot pens, whether inexpensive or dear are some of the best writing instruments on the planet! The feel of it in your hand and whilst writing makes you want to write more. Fill with a nicely scented ink and you will write pages! Pilot is proof that quality doesn't have to come with a high price. I do prefer the medium nib and fortunately you have the choice with this one. Highly recommend.

Love this pen
I love it. I've long wanted a reliable fountain pen. I've bought plenty of fountain pens over the years, but they all fail me at some point, and usually much too soon. A friend gifted me this pen, and I loved it immediately. So I bought another. It writes reliably and easily. The grip is nice in the hand. The ink doesn't goop and glop. The only thing I'd change is the instruction on loading the ink barrel -- you want the pointy, thinner end at the top and the fatter, wider end toward the nib.Really a great pen. I could see writing with these smooth operators exclusively.

Definitely a Beginner Friendly, Nice Pen
I bought this as my first "official" fountain pen. There's so many recommendations for a beginner fountain pen and I went with this one. Now I thought the body of the pen was black, but it's gray. That's the only reason I took a star. And that has nothing to do with the pen itself. I chose the Kakuno because of the price and ability to fit a larger converter in the future. I like how the pen writes. Didn't have any problems at all. Just make sure you push the cartridge in until you feel the "pop." Then I let it sit for about half an hour, tip down. I didn't get any leaking and it wrote just fine. I went with the Medium nib because it's said that a Japanese Medium nib is closer to a Western Fine nib, and I wanted something close to a 0.5. Well, it's more of a 0.7 line. I can't tell the difference in line size between the Medium nib Kakuno, a Pilot G2 0.7, Energel 0.7, and Inkjoy 0.7. Just figure I should let it be known. If you're debating purchasing this pen, just get it. It's a nice, lightweight pen that writes well.

Great pen for anyone that wants to use a simple fountain pen
While marketed as a "beginner's pen" or a "kid's pen" there is nothing here that any fountain pen user shouldn't like. It writes well and is smooth right out of the package.. just add your ink and go. I used a Pilot CON-40 converter which works fine. Keep in mind a Pilot M nib is going to be a little more fine and a European M. This is exactly what I wanted for writing in inexpensive composition books. While I do like my Pilot Metropolitan pens I think I might find myself using this a little more due to its light weight and larger grip. Only thing I would consider adding would be a clip but I can live without it. Having a Happy Nib is a bonus.
