Quest for a Durable, Waterproof, Trail Shoe with Good Traction
Walking the dog daily through dewy grass, puddles, and the occasional slippery crossing of shallow streams without ending up experiencing wet toes is my quest. I have purchased enough "waterproof" shoes that I realize water soundness does not last forever; however, I do expect at least a year of moderate use and dry feet to consider the shoes "waterproof" (i.e. I will gladly purchase a new pair of shoes yearly to guarantee dry feet). I am a big supporter of Merrel shoes overall, with the Men's Moeb II being very water tight, but I have experienced severe issues with poor traction on round rocks especially when shoe bottoms or rocks are wet. When my Merrels wore out, I recently tried a pair of Columbia Redmond V2 Mid Waterproof which was initially waterproof and had improved traction on slippery rocks; however, after only 3 months of very moderate use I experienced significant issues with wet feet just walking through dewy grass. They offered me merchandise credit if I return them, which I will do at my shipping cost. I researched other brands and found these Salomon shoes with decent reviews and aggressive looking traction. I normally buy a 11 wide, but there were no wide options so I tried the 11 but had to exchange for a 11.5 due to pinching just behind my toes. These fit a little tight on one foot but since the insole could be removed to free up room as a last resort, I decided to keep them and hope they wear-in. After only one use, my foot felt comfortable walking and within a few days they were a perfect fit. The attached picture shows shoes in a shallow stream with toecaps submerged but not coming over the bootie. No water penetration and even the outer material didn't seem to saturate with water like the Columbia shoes did. The wet traction was noticeably improved over previous brands I have tried but of course slippery rocks remain slippery. The aggressive traction is very good on hilly trails with loose rocks/pebbles. Also noteworthy, I purchased "used like-new" for a significant savings which I try to do whenever I can to reduce costs (depending on the product and potential for it being resold with a flaw not identified in the prior-return process). With only a short amount of usage so far, these shoes check all the boxes for me, and if nothing changes, I will certainly plan to repurchase when the need arises.

Awesome footwear
Great shoe. Tight at first but quickly conforms and fits very comfortably. Lightweight but solid and durable. Heel cup can be a little loose but even with slippage still feels secure. Waterproof so they don’t breathe well (as expected); feet/socks get wet from the inside due to perspiration. Traction is impressive on most surfaces, moisture can be an issue on some (as with most outsoles). Last pair lasted over two years daily wear before sole separation became an issue. Will definitely purchase again if have the option.

Ordering again
These are my husband's favorite hiking shoes. He bought the first pair at REI, over the three years ago, the second from Amazon and now I am about to order a third. Weirdly though, when I click the reorder, it becomes a woman's shoe. Hefinds them very comfortable and give his foot good support.

Comfort and fit…
Without question, my X Ultra’s are the best comfort and fit for my slightly narrower than average foot size. They are my everyday shoe no matter what is one my schedule from yardwork to the gym to trail hiking. Excellent stability and traction. No issues with durability. Also, nice with a pair of jeans for a night out…

Unbelievably durable!
I like a pair of everything shoes. These fit the bill! I use them daily for my occupation as a handyman. After six months, they have not pulled a single stitch or had any delamination of the soles. This is the first pair of shoes I have had in over 10 years that when the laces broke I didn't just go buy another pair of shoes. Yes, most of them are that bad. I've worn Merrill, Keen, Red Wing, Chippewa, you name it. The soles are actually wearing out before the shoe falls apart! Yes, they are a bit narrow. I always throw out the factory insoles no matter the brand. Aftermarket insoles are always worth it. Every time I strap these shoes on, I get Happy Feet.

Great Travel Shoe
Very happy with my Salomon X Ultra Pioneer. I was planning a 2-month trip abroad and wanted a shoe that came in size 12.5, had a good tread, and was waterproof. These Salomons did a great job! While travelling, I was logging 20,000 steps 5 - 6 miles daily. A bit warm, so I went with thin socks all the time. (I think they would be extra warm if worn with thick hiking socks.

Bulky, but Comfortable
It's a hefty shoe. Not convinced it is waterproof but will test it out and update if needed. The sole is rugged and provides good traction. True to size. Took it out on a trial hike and so far it is comfortable.
