Just what I wanted!!!
So, huge robots fighting against huge godzilla like monsters from a different planet, what can be bad about that!I pre-ordered this and it arrived 2 days after its official release, great fast delivery. And the blu ray itself. Well, I watched it the day it arrived and it was just what I had hoped, great picture and amazing audio. If you are worried about it not being up to par, don't think about it anymore, it's perfect. It's a 2 disc addition, obviously the first disc is the blu ray movie, the second contains the special features, which are also in blu ray (not like other blu rays where the extras are in normal DVD format). The film itself is in : 1080p High Definition 16x9 1.85:1 DTS HD Master Audio (English 5.1)There are about 2 hours of extras, including a great 'Director's Notebook' section which is explained by Guillermo del Toro himself, describing his ideas before creating the movie and all his visions about what he wanted to get out of the film. It also includes a behind the scenes documentary showing the digital artisrty of Pacific Rim.There are also some deleted scenes, which are ok, but what I really enjoyed was the blooper reel included in the extras which shows behind the scenes mistakes and comedy moments with the actors during filming.5 Stars for Picture Quality5 Stars for Audio5 Stars for the Extras5 Stars for Service and DeliveryDon't think twice, this is way better than Transformers!

Just lose yourself in the fun of it!
If you like a slow, thought provoking sci-fi story like "2001A Space Odyssey" then this most definitely is not for you!!.It doesn't waste time with the slow build up, multi layered characterisation or a deep understanding of scientific principles!Beginning with a quick recap of the situation, namely huge Godzilla like monsters are coming through an undersea portal and wreaking havoc on the seaports of the world and we have built equally huge metal machines to fight them it's straight into almost non stop action.Computer generated graphics are now so good it's almost impossible to distinguish the real from the CGI, and Pacific Rim really exploits them.Huge metal monsters battle huge organic monsters but so incredibly real that when the film ends you suddenly wonder "where did almost 2 hours go"?Because you really can get sucked into the story, which, silly as it is, does not pretend to be anything other than mind blowing entertainment and just grabs you and won't let go.But there is one part which really stands out for me, and that is a sequence of a young Japanese girl, all alone in a destroyed city, holding a shoe in her hand and calling for her mother.Incredibly poignant in all that destruction it highlights just how really good the creators of this film are and underscores the talent of the director Guillermo Del Toro.So sit back and just lose yourself in the film!

Giant robots attack other dimensional monsters!
After a couple of false stars, director Guillermo Del Toro finally gets another movie under his belt, with a film designed to appeal to the big kid in all of us.This is one of those movies that has to get the exposition in at the start: monsters christened Kaiju are attacking coastal cities, after appearing from the depth of the ocean. Humanity fights back with Jaegers. Giants robots that can beat Kaiju in a one on one fight. Jaegers are each controlled by two human pilots, whose minds need to be very compatible in order to be in sync.Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket [Charlie Hunnam] is introduced to us in this opening sequence, which sets the scene with the aforementioned exposition, gives you a spectacular battle scene in stormy weather, and a very visually arresting conclusion. Plus putting Raleigh at the start of a character journey.Flash forward a few years. With Raleigh no longer in the Jaeger programme. And said programme seemingly done for as governments go for big walls on the coast instead, the Jaeger programme has to survive on it's own. It's leader Stacker Pentecost [Idris Elba] bring Charlie back into the fold. But with an obsolete machine and an untested partner, can everything come together in tome to save humanity? The film does feature a fair few other moments of Jaegers battling monsters in the ocean, story or otherwise. All of which re pretty spectacular visually.Charlie Hunnam is a capable lead. Idris Elba makes an effortlesly good commander figure. Comic relief comes from Burn Gorman and Charlie day as a pair of squabbling scientists. These characters are played just right, never going for stereotypes or easy laughs. There's also a pair of tough Australian Jaeger pilots with family issues. Who do make an impression. The fight stuff is all good, the oriental setting is well portrayed. And the characters are all fine. But no more than that. All of them have character journeys and develop over the course of the movie, and are in different places by the end. But none are particularly remarkable or standout creations. You won't mind them, and you will be quite happily following them, but none will really stick in your mind for very long. The Jaeger vs Kaiju fights will though. For a bit longer. It's a very capable bit of blockbuster entertainment, with lots to grab the eye. But it's just lacking that certain something to take it up to five star material. A decent enough escapist watch, though. Worth 4/5.Do keep watching during the end credits for an extra scene. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, Castilian Spanish.Subtitles: English, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish. It begins with two trailers. Which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote.Extras are:An audio commentary from the director.Deleted scenes: four very short ones. These can be watched individually or all in a row. If doing the latter they run for three minutes in total.Gag reel: three minutes of outtakes. As usual with these there are a couple of genuinely funny moments amongst shots of people pulling funny faces. There's also the usual flyer with website address and code to allow you to download a digital copy of the film onto a digital device from that site.
