Yes, This will work on tin cans that have ring pulls, such as soup cans. The can opener needs to bite into the ridge and cuts round the outside. The ring pull may get in the way on some, but you can open the bottom of the can instead (provided it has a pressed ridge edge).

Q: Does this cut through the can lid or around the side leaving sharp edges on the can? TIA

It cuts around the side but I haven't noticed that it leaves sharp edges. When you cut the lid off the lid stays on the item so that you can add it straight to the bin. Hope this helps.
