It's primer
It's a grey primer, does what it's supposed to.The can is small and good for a few models but expensive compared to Acrylic automotive primer or spraying another primer through an airbrush.

Essential painting medium - but you can save money!
The moment you progress beyond the basic, "stick-it-together-and-slap-on-the-paint" stage of plastic kit modelling you will find that priming your model before painting is an essential step and the only way to get a really decent paint finish. Tamiya's grey primer is a very high quality product and it dries to a fine, smooth finish whilst still giving a good key for the topcoat.HOWEVER! Do bear in mind that standard automotive primer (e.g. H@lfords Plastic Primer) can also be used at somewhat lower cost. The finish isn't //quite// as fine, although a decent buffing with a scrap of worn denim will improve matters.Another trick worth considering is, if the model has large areas of white (for instance RAF V-bomber anti-flash white) use white primer instead of this grey stuff and then you won't need to paint the model at all! Again, automotive white primer (NOT appliance white which is high gloss) will do almost as good a job for a smaller outlay.
