You Only Live Twice [Blu-ray] [1967]

The Formula Grows Stale
This film has dated badly.I'm rewatching the Bond films in release order: this is the 5th and the first to feel slack and overblown. The Japanese location filming still looks lovely,& the costumes and customs are very interesting, while the theme song is one of the best (Japanese instruments that I don't think were on the single release) but Sean Connery looks either tired or bored most of the time. And what happens to his Japanese makeover towards the end? Mind you, the whole franchise needed a makeover by 1967.The "formula" is all too evident......scene with M, flirtation with Moneypenny, incidental casual sex scenes, gadgets from tetchy Q, death of sacrificial lamb, larger-than-life villain, big battle, Bond and leading lady snogging in small boat, interrupted by bigger (phallic) vessel, 'Bond Will Return' caption........Ho, hum!

Buy it if it’s for you!
Product arrived in perfect condition, and the disc works like a charm. My only issue is personal taste: I don’t especially like this film. Sean Connery probably had one of my least favourite Bond tenures (I’m much more of a Pierce Brosnan/Roger Moore guy) - but that is purely a me-problem! The sellers did a great job; it’s a newly packaged, well-functioning DVD.

The first great departure
This was the first Bond movie I ever saw, and as such will always have a place in my affections, just as the books we read as children stay with us throughout our lives, but....This was also the first Bond movie to have nothing whatsoever to do with the book on which it was 'based'. Only the title and the names of some of the characters remain, which I can't help feeling sorry about. When I read the book, I thought 'Hey, this will make a really great and original... oh, bugger!' That's not to say it's a bad film. The beautiful camera work and deliscious score alone make it worth watching, and the sci-fi-spy plot works well if you suspend disbelief. If only they hadn't called it 'You Only Live Twice', and kept that quite extraordinary story free for propper adaptation.

This slipped out of my view over the years. If you love 60s this is a good nostalgic movie to revisit.Highly recommended.
