Good history book
The History of RussiaFor a history book this is probably the best one I have read. Usually they are boring and dry, but this one gets to the point and keeps it moving. The author doesn’t linger and drone on about every little detail, he tells you what you need to know about the event and keeps moving forward which is great especially when it is about something like Russia that has such a long and vast history that could fill many books. He covers the main points in this book about how they came to become Russia, the first leaders including the invasion of the Mongols all the way up to Putin (including his invasion of Ukraine which makes this book incredibly current), and I love that he included authors, composers, and scientist that have come out of Russia as well because they have blessed us with many amazing artists and scientists. The RomanovsI have always had a fascination with the Romanovs mainly starting with Catherine the Great (gotta love a woman that overthrows her husband and takes over a country and runs it as well if not better than a man; especially one as big as Russia) and then the tragic end of tsar Nicolas II’s family. To hear an extensive history of all of them and what they achieved and didn’t achieve is nice to learn. If you want to learn about the history of Russia and have it put to you plainly without a lot of extra details that you don’t need this is a set of books to read. And if you want to learn more about the Romanov rule (because honestly I think we all are curious about them in some way) this is a great book to read.

This is a two book set dealing with history of not only Russian but includes the Romanovs. These were excellent book well researched and easy to understand. I found the information about the East and Western church interesting. If you are a history nut like I am this is a book that I think you would find an interest in.

Russian history has been troubled and exciting as well as in reformative
This book is an exciting glimpse into the history of the Russian people from the beginning of the formation of the Russian Nation down to the present time. It has been researched in the book is extremely well written and informative. There are numerous maps and illustrations which enhance the reading experience. This is the kind of book I would like to have had as a resource when I was teaching world history. I highly recommend this book for those who are interested in history and want to understand that the events which shaped Europe and put brought about the events which we are experiencing today. Russia has had many wars during their existence, many of them brutal and bloody, and we can learn much by studying these wars and the causes and consequences of them. The book is written in two parts.(Part 1 History of Russia) The Slavic Russians were established initially a nation of loosy organized nationalities with each village having their own government and Kings. When the Vikings came, they set up some control in Novgorod and Kiev and soon they were in control of the area. The Russian state grew to encompass a large portion of Eastern Europe including Moscow. Genghis Khan invaded the area and for a short time was successful in ruling what was called the Golden Horde. Ivan the Great was successful in throwing off the yolk of Mongol rule and set Moscow up as the center of the Russian government. Later there was a power vacuum for the throne of Russia and the Romanov family started a dynasty which lasted for centuries. It was only ended by the Communist Revolution. The Soviet Union promised great reforms but ended up in dictatorial control of Russia. Russia still faces many of the same problems which it has faced throughout its history. Putin is now entered into a bloody war with Ukraine for the seizure of the territory which was once under Russian control.(Part 2 the Romanovs) The Romanov dynasty came into being during the time of Russia's time of trouble. The first Romanov was chosen because they could not find another suitable person to rule Russia. The Romanovs ruled Russia for three centuries before the Communist Revolution ended the last of the Romanov line. There were many great tars in Russia such as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and others who reformed the country and made it into the great nation that it became. Much of the work of modernizing the army was done by Peter the Great. This part tells of the accomplishments of each of the Romanov tsars and the struggles which they had to overcome to achieve these accomplishments. Russia became a power to be reckoned with and they helped to drive the politics of Europe.

Inferior
One of the most boring and uninformative books of history I've read. No index or helpful footnotes. Totally amateurish. Writing quality of a college freshman in a hurry to complete an assignment.

This is all about Russian History from the beginning of the Russian Nation to current times. If you have ever wanted to know how we got to be where we are in the world today, this is a great place to start. The Russian Empire has had a long and exciting history. Russia has also had some very well know rulers of example, Ivan the Terrible and Catharine the Great. Learn how they became the leader of Russia and how did they get their nicknames?
