Resident Evil: Death Island

One of the best Resident Evil Movies in my opinion.
As my header says, this is in my opinion, one of the best Resident Evil movies, and features a lot of the game series characters and has a nice Resident Evil vibe to it.Encase you are wondering, this does work in a UK Bluray player, though i wish there was a 4K version of this in the UK, i've not yet seen one around.

An action packed instalment that contains all the fan favourite characters.
This review contains spoilers for not only this movie, but other Resident Evil games and films! When I realised the main 'gang' of the Resident Evil franchise were all taking starring roles for this film, I could hardly wait to get my hands on it. As you might guess from the picture on the box, Jill is very much the main character for most of the film, whilst Leon, Chris, Claire and Rebecca are more or less side characters, though some remain centre-stage in their own ways. Each character (aside from Chris, who's main purpose seems to be worrying about Jill) seems to have their own purpose throughout, but ultimately, all common goals seem to converge around Jill Valentine and her mental anguish and trauma. What I enjoyed very much was the time invested into exploring Jill's trauma from her brain-washing experience under Wesker (RE5) and how she's (not) coping by behaving rashly, making dangerous calls in the field and generally avoiding talking about her feelings. Chris is ever reliable, clearly doing his best to reach her during this difficult time in her life, but he is side-lined somewhat (as are the other characters) as the story does more or less revolve around Jill despite the major fan faves being centre-stage.There are some very nicely choreographed fight sequences and they were wise enough to give Leon almost as much platform as Jill, but not quite as much. He gets a very nice one-on-one fight sequence with one of the main villains and spends just as much time spitting out one-liners as he does fighting the good fight.Leon and Chris also have some good co-op team work moments towards the end and most importantly (for me as a female fan), at no point does it feel like the men are converging to 'rescue' the damsel in distress (Jill) so much as they are allowing her the space and support to work through her issues in her own time.Claire is rather predictable in the role of rescuer, doing her best for the bad guys and good guys alike, and there is one heart-wrenching moment when something bad happens to her (and others), though the film falls short here in exploring what Chris's emotional reaction to this is, given Claire is his sister all said and done. He seems far more concerned with Jill than his sister (or himself, for that matter).Rebecca Chambers also features, though mostly as the brains behind the scenes agent/scientist, but is ultimately more of a side-character until a critical moment arrives where only she can save the day - a point in the plot which felt very predictable and contrived, to be honest. Hunnigan also features via voice-over only. The main male villain of the film has a good backstory which is set up to nicely parallel Jill's current issues of guilt and trauma, giving an interesting look into what 'could be' if the worst was to happen and Jill did not get a handle on herself. There are technically two main villains to the story - one male, one female, both working together - but only the male is given large talking parts, whilst the female (I can't recall either of their names, sorry - though this probably says something for their memorability as characters) is hardly given any lines at all and seems to mostly exist as sex appeal. Her outfit is completely impractical (heavy cleavage focus) and the fight she has with Leon, despite being a death match, seems unnecessarily sexually charged thanks to the camera angles and intimate physical moves she uses. All in all, it's an enjoyable ride and as Jill and Leon are my favourite Resident Evil characters, I loved watching a film in which they starred side by side. You don't technically need to have seen the previous Resident Evil CGI films to follow this one, but as it does contain returning characters and villains, it does help to know what happened previously. The same can be said for the games, as there are references to past events and characters throughout.

Resident Evil Death Island
I never bothered with the Resident Evil motion movies. However its a very different situation with the CGI movies. Like the previous CGI movies this is written by the people who write the and direct the games. Who better then Capcom, the people behind the massive Resident Evil game franchise to make movies that are highly polished and remain true to the original characters from the game. What's it about? Well, eh, zombies 🧟♀️ and that's all you're getting. No spoilers from me. Suffice to say it's as en point as any that have gone before it and Resident Evil: Death Island is a scream of a good watch Five stars & Two thumbs up.Once again, nice one Capcom.
