This is a great book! Wonderful information source and an excellent overview ...
This is (was) a library book from the Macclesfield Library in the UK. Inside the cover it is stamped, "withdrawn for sale", so I assume Amazon has not resorted to filching library books for sale online. That doesn't happen, right? But I digress. This is a great book! Wonderful information source and an excellent overview of the Viking migration period, written by folks who know and love the subject. The translation(s) into English are occasionally imperfect, but that is small criticism to an overall most excellent piece of work. If you have any interest in Vikings and their amazing impact on the western world, this book should definitely be on your shelf.

Very disappointed in Viking Empires
Having read a book about 1066 mentioning Harald Hardrada reclaiming the english cown after ahving been mercenarious of Constntinople, I was looking for a book summarising the history and influences of the Viking around the world durinf the middle ages. Viking empires is presented as such as sum, but it is not.Viking Empires is disappointing in several aspects:-firstly because, contrary to what is said in the presentation of the book, it treats only the viking history in the west, and not at all their interactionin with Russia or with constantinople.- secondly because even in the West, it is mainly concerned with the Vikings in England, Ireland, Scotland and the North Sea Islands, leaving aside as well Holland and Friesland as France and the Normandy.- thirdly because it appears rather as a collection of monographiesaccumulating details without organising them.- fourthly beacuse of many inconsistencies. For example, Normans is firstly presented as irrelevant to the study of Vikings, because they would been completely assimilated to the Franks,so that the book does not give any information about how they were assimilated, if they kept links with Scandinavia, etc... But later the tapestry of Bayeux is used as a major source for the Viking ships.

Great!!
I bought this book for a report I had to write in school. It's pretty informative about the various Viking empires and also the differences in culture and warfare.
