Good, reliable, comfortable mid range boot
Salomon has been my go-to brand for hiking boots over the last ten years and have carried me many a mile over many a mountain. My last two pairs were Salomon X Ultra Mid 3 GTX, but sadly can’t seem to find these anywhere now and I imagine they’re discontinued. The Salomon X Braze boot looked very similar and on the face of it has similar features, with Gore-tex waterproof membrane, the contigrip outsole, strong toe box etc. so decided to give it a try. Firstly let’s cover size: I’d read a few reviews that said the sizing was small on these. My normal shoe is 7.5, and I always go half size up in a walking boot. My last two pairs of Salomon have been size 8 and fitted perfectly, so I ordered 8 again (but played safe by using Try before you buy). I’m pleased to say the X Braze fitted perfectly and seemed to me to be the same size 8 as my previous boots. I tested this by removing the insoles and putting in my custom orthotics which also fitted perfectly. On to comfort: to test the boots out I wore them for a couple of short walks of about 1.5 miles and they felt very comfortable. Slightly stiff maybe compared to my old ones, but that’s to be expected for brand new boots. The second walk, the following day, was a real test! A 12 mile hike in the hills across a mix of wet boggy terrain and rough stony tracks! The boots were very comfortable and tbh, I forgot I wasn’t wearing my old ones! My feet remained dry and no soreness whatsoever. Traction-wise they were generally very good, there was a little sideways slip on muddy sloping banks but other than that they coped really well. As the video shows, the cleaned up pretty well by just allowing the mud to dry and then banging it off. You can also see the gussetted sock-type tongue which prevents water getting in. The lacing system is good and the laces remained fastened for the duration. I would have preferred two grab lace loops at the top of the boot rather than just one as I find this easier to release and get the show off. Salomon have clearly tried to save some money on the insoles - they are poor quality and offer no arch support at all. To me this isn’t a problem as I always use my own orthotic insoles to replace the standard ones anyway so they went straight in the bin. Summary: a good mid range boot, fitted well and true to size IMO. Suitable for multi-terrain walking and hiking and on hills. Feels like a bit of a slightly de-specified version of my old favourite the Mid 3 GTX, probably more of a £90 -£100 boot than £115, but a very good all rounder.
