Here's where they really took off. This 1975 LP cracked the Top 10 as the band perfected their orchestral-rock sound with the hits Evil Woman; Strange Magic, and the rest of this classic album. Includes four bonus alternate mixes and versions!

Let's face it; this is an early era ELO classic album.
The Electric light orchestra (ELO); first formed in 1972/73 and soon forged their style of blending contemporary rock with the use of traditional classical music instruments I.E. cellos,violins...They became regular occupants of the UK singles and albums charts by the time of their fifth studio album release - Face the music - in November 1975.This now seven-piece band consisting of main songwriter and lead vocalists & lead guitarist - Jeff Lynne, along with drummer/percussionist Bev Bevan,Richard Tandy: Keyboards,Kelly Groucutt bass g/lead and backing vocals and central to the whole ELO orchestral sounds; Mik Kaminski violin,Melvin Gayle and Hugh McDowell cellos'.Face the music: is often regarded by critics and fans alike as being one of ELO's best albums, and after a few listens - I definitely agree. The original eight track album certainly contains musical variety, centred around guitar and orchestral sounds.Opening track: Fire on high; is an experimental instrumental in the extreme.complete with choir-like (wordless) backing vocals - a pure gem of a start to proceedings.T2: Waterfall - is a melodic ballad-type offering.T3: Evil woman - UK hit single with distinctive female backing vocals very much in evidence.T4: Night rider - is probably the most heavy rock sounding offering on FTM.i detect a slight similarity of the Bacarach & David song: Walk on by on the opening lines of Jeff Lynne's vocals 🤔🤫T5: poker - although ELO were riding high during the progressive rock era of the 1970's; I would never shove them in the prog-rock category of say artists such as; Genesis,Yes and King crimson.Having said that,I find Poker the most reminiscent of said groups; with heavy guitar riffs and swirling keyboards - superb track all the same.T6: Strange magic - JL'S higher-ended vocal delivery at the forefront.also a lesser known UK hit single.T7: Down home town - is a rollicking, country & Western hoe down feelgood song.fiddles and those female backing vocalists again with their "land of dixie" contributions on the coda.T8: final track/original album closer - One summer dream - is an epic melancholic ballad to finish on,and a fitting end to Face the music - a classic earlier ELO era album. The 2006 expanded re-issue of FTM - includes four bonus tracks; Fire on high intro (early alternative mix),Evil woman (stripped down mix),Strange magic (US single edit) and Waterfall (instrumental mix). All previously unreleased except Strange magic edit.and all welcome inclusions, with the exception of THAT single edit! The re-issue package is pretty good too:Includes; short intro from Jeff Lynne on the background and inovatiion behind album and more extensive sleeve notes by one Rob Caiger - ELO archivist - covering recording and touring activities etc during this period.Re-mastered sound is truly excellent and part of a wider back catalogue of such album re-issues.N.B. have to give Louis Clarke a special mention; he of string arrangements and conductor of full orchestra throughout the Face the music album - sterling stuff.Enough praise now from this particular reviewer - enjoy this classic ELO album!

Discovery was a major change (and I love this album
Having read earlier reviews, I've just purchased/received this album. It's fabulous. If I may be bold, this might be considered the first of a trilogy of ELO albums: Face The Music, A New World Record, Out Of The Blue. You can here the development throughout these three. Discovery was a major change (and I love this album, too; albeit "Disco-Very"!).But back to FTM. Great songwriting, great orchestration. As for Down Home Town: if you like Dylan/Travelling Wilburys, you will like this too. Did the TWs cover this track? Not sure. But it sure sounds like a pre-cursor to them.In my opinion, there isn't a bad track on this album, and you can here how Jeff Lynne's songwriting is evolving into the tracks on A New World Record and Out Of The Blue. I love it!I'm now tempted to go back an album, to ... Elderado ...

Simply Fantastic
Even taking into account the dodgy track "Down Home Town", this has to rate as ELO's best album. The songwriting is superior to Eldorado yet it hasn't quite reached the commercialism of A New World Record and subsequent albums. "Fire On High" is an incredible opener and leads seamlessly into probably what is THE greatest album track of all time, "Waterfall", a harmony drenched masterpiece. "Evil Woman", "Strange Magic" and "Nightrider" are three of ELO's best ever singles and then there's "Poker" which has to rate as their best rocker.A previous reviewer claims the only good track on offer on Face The Music is "Fire On High" which makes me wonder if he has been listening to the same album!! Still, there's no accounting for taste!

Every track a classic.. nearly.
Jeff and ElO are really ramping up their format, style and volume on this album. It sounds so fresh and the gorgeous piano on evil woman, the bonus track, sounds so bluesy played v loud. If you can I recommend playing this whole album at 11, let it fill your senses and lose yourself in ‘one summer dream’ and it’s soothing strings.

You have to Face the Music
Love the great ELO, I have just started to collect Vinyl again after 30 odd years and when I saw this I thought yes why not. All I need now is a new record deck to play them on and that will come soon. Face the music released in 1975 is a classic ELO Album with some superbly crafted songs produced and written by the great Jeff Lynne, if you are an ELO Fan then I would highly recommend this album.

Love it to bits!
It`s got melody, tunes, songwriting of the highest order! If this or any other ELO album was by some so-called great artist we`d all shout classic album! Cause its by Jeff from Birmingham it`s just a few tunes chucked together! Let`s give him credit at last and see at last a true craftsman at work. One summer dream alone is worth buying this album! Good on yer Jeff!
