OK, I ordered this set after ordering another 10 inch travel set which arrived damaged. This set was twice the cost of the other set, and it is worth every penny that I paid! The finish on the chess pieces is much smoother and evenly applied than the other set. The quality of carving of the small wood pieces is superior, particularly the knights (the hardest piece to carve). Highly skilled carvers on display. House of Chess even gives you 2 sets of knights, the German Knight style and what looks like the "Fierce Knight" style to choose from (I prefer the German Knights on this set). 2 extra queens and 2 extra pawns as well. The quality of carving, feel, and design of all the pieces are impressive. A joy to play with. The finish on the chessboard is much better looking and likely more durable than on the first cheaper set I ordered. Hinges were misaligned on the cheaper set, resulting in the finish being pulled off the side of the board when opening the hinge. The hinges on this set were correctly installed, and of better quality. The magnetism was a bit stronger on the pieces of this set compared to the cheaper set, although one of the knights has a weak magnet. The board has 4 rubber "feet" that you can place into holes in the bottom of the board, enabling the board to set off a table or whatever surface you are placing the board on. A very thoughtful and useful feature. Comes with a bag to place to the board in, giving a bit of scratch protection to the beautiful board. I am very happy with this set, well worth twice the price of inferior products, and a fine choice for a 10 inch travel set. UPDATE: Seller replaced the piece that had a weak magnet. Incredible customer service! I love this little set! If you want a beautiful travel set for a reasonable price, look no further!

yeah this thing is nice! I purchased two. One for myself and one for a friend's birthday who has become obsessed with chess and surpassed me. Great portable size, and yet still feels good to play on. The quality is very good and worth the price! I initially ordered the 12" version of this same brand but sent it back instantly without fully opening it as I could tell it wasn't travel friendly at all.

What more can be said on the beauty of this travel set? I’d like to add that the readability of this creation also unique among small sets. Many small travel chess sets are practically useless when it comes to actually using it to read a game: Usually, the pieces and squares do not match. The basis of the pieces are usually too large, making the combinations very difficult to see and read On this set, the pieces do fit the squares and reading a game is not only possible but a pleasure on such a beautiful piece of work.

The workmanship is superb. I would like to have a fifteen to nineteen set and box made by the same person

I’ve had my board for a few months now, and it is wonderful! We play chess a few nights a week and our other two boards weren’t what we wanted. One board was a cheap dollar store one and the other board was entirely too big at 15” all around. This magnetic board is great and we love it. The magnets hold beautifully and the pieces are all nice and sturdy. At first I was hesitant to spend this much on a board, but it is well worth it. The size is great and we love that each piece has a place on the inside, so they aren’t just knocking around when packed. Whether you are a novice or have been playing for years, this chess board will give you hours of enjoyment. The board and pieces are very well made, however the bag for storing and protecting not the best. It was a little flimsy and very snug and hard to fit the board inside, so I did make a quilted new one, other than that I have nothing negative to say. Happy with my purchase.

The board itself is beautiful and it's material is solid. Now the chess pieces are somewhat lacking. They are not crafted with enough details and doesn't feel solid to the touch. All that lacking is covered by a nice coat of varnish. With closer inspection, I think the kind of wood ( very light) they used for the pieces probably wounld not allow to be carved anymore detailed than that? Magnets are decent. Overall the price doesn't match with the quality. I might keep the board and find another set of pieces.

This 10" chess set just arrived. Wow! Beautifully packaged, the board is superbly finished, shiny, flawless; the wood is beautiful, with four little screw-in feet to stabilize the board. The green interior holds all the pieces, with each hole correctly cut to the corresponding piece. Each color has an extra queen and pawn, and two extra knights of a different style. The pieces are very nice, well-finished, smooth. The magnets hold fine, and I could hold the loaded board upside down with no shift in pieces. I will say that I looked long and hard at all the choices. This one was quite a bit more than others that looked similar, but the quality is what I wanted and it's so worth it! The board also has the algebraic figures engraved into the edges, which were hard to find on the cheaper sets. Two thumbs up for this set!

Packed with features that other cheaper set manufacturers cut corners on. This checks all the boxes for me. Curved board design, chess notation, extra pieces, vintage style closure, quality hinges, great color contrast, lacquer coating, carry bag, adjustable & removable feet. Very well thought out and prepared with attention to detail. Puts the Chinese made sets to shame, worth the extra money.
