We're Doomed: The Dad's Army Story BBC

Charming, Detailed, Mostly True Bio of a great television series
The movie itself tells you up front that most of the details are accurate; hence I include that in the title of my review. I live in the US and ordered this DVD to be played on my region-free player.I have to admit that I found Jimmy Perry a little hard to take at first, but then as the story continues and you see him grow into acceptance of his role as writer, it was very heartwarming. The movie is told brilliantly, though more concise than what I would have wished. I think it could have done very well with another 30 minutes. All of the actors come across believably as the men they portray, and the back and forth between Croft and Perry is just enough to show that each man unselfishly could engage in collaboration. The movie also shows that amazing, tangled, and perilous journey that even a brilliant script has to take to get to production. There's a lot of humor and warmth but also a nice dash of the hard realities of working with others. I really enjoyed this movie. The line at the very end is hilarious.

This film was marvelous, from the writing to the acting. I bought the entire series when we were in England last.

Doomed, but getting better!
It's only an hour long, and its a docudrama about the origins of a TV series made in England forty years ago. Who would care, except the series it memorialises is the immortal "Dad's Army". That earns it three stars from me. The fourth came from superb casting of the original characters. Like the original series, it gently pokes fun at itself. If you don't know the original show, you may well miss the point; if you do, you will not regret watching this short but nostalgic feature.

Better than the recent film
This is a much better watch than the recent cinema remake of Dad's Army. The actors playing the Dad's Army cast do so with brilliant replication of the originals, and the story is told with charm and enthusiasm. Anyone who considers themselves to be a fan of this series will find much to enjoy here. My only complaint--the brevity. It runs for just about an hour, and while no one wants unnecessary padding, I liked it so much, I was sorry it was over so soon.

DVD review
This is mainly a review of the DVD release itself, rather than the programme. This is a very enjoyable hour long television film, first broadcast over Christmas 2015 on BBC Two, on the creation of the long-running BBC sitcom Dad's Army. Even if you are not a fan of Dad's Army this is a great watch, particularly if you are fan of other docudramas on the creation of famous TV series (e.g. 'An Adventure in Space and Time').The DVD is a little disappointing. It is very bare bones, including the film itself and nothing else. There are DVD chapters, and English subtitles for the hard of hearing, but that's it as far as extras go. It would have been nice to have some extra features on the production of the film, if not director or actor commentary. The film was produced and broadcast in HD, but there is no Blu-ray release, so obviously you can only watch it in standard definition on the DVD release. It is however available for purchase as a download in HD from online retailers like iTunes and BBC Store, for cheaper than the price of the DVD on Amazon. At time of writing in May 2016, the DVD on Amazon is £7.99, whereas the HD download from iTunes is £2.49 and from BBC Store is £3.99. As far as I can tell, these don't come with any extras either, so if you don't mind not having a DVD/BD this may be the better option.Overall, great programme, let down by a disappointing DVD release.

Great insight
Absolutely brilliant telling of how the show was created. Fascinating insight. The actors are all faithful to the characters we know and love. Funny and sad, really enjoyed it. Recommended

A Joy to Watch
An interesting and informative account of the difficulties experienced in getting this on screen. Though not all the characters were perfect for their parts, I would like to give John Sessions the highest praise for his portrayal of Arthur Lowe.
