Useful but dense
I got this for a friend who teaches English as a foreign language. He said it is clearly laid out and easy to navigate, but a little dull in the writing and presentation. There are no images, and not much white space on the page. That said, it's fairly comprehensive and useful.

Logical, accurate and readable (and up to date)
I am not an English teacher and these are the views of a retired industrial chemist who managed a “C” at GCE O level in ca 1965/6. A brief look at the index and the organisation of content shows that considerable thought has been given the exactly what is being taught ( so many varieties of English application / levels), whether English will be the primary language of the student and the potential ranges of ages of the students (from Primary school to adults) as well as how to interact with the students by getting them to engage with the subject to get the best results for their needs / objectives, including advice on in course assessments. There are plenty of examples and comments in the text to challenge novice teachersTo give the book full justice will take longer for in depth reading than my timescale for this VINE review. I see this is a third edition of a well respected book and has been updated for the digital / multimedia age. Interesting that both the spoken and the written word are covered (logically) and parts of the book start with the teaching of simple legible hand writing ( I was brought up on Marion Richardson style, I believe) although I rely a lot now using keyboards as my hands now struggle with conventional pens or biros. . As a relative outsider I see it as logical ,accurate, and readable – which is as good a recommendation as any “textbook” can get

A text for teachers of English not a text for teaching English
This is a very good book but there is one caveat; it should be obvious but I can see people might miss it. This is a text designed to teach people how to teach English, it is not a text to be used to teach a student English Language. I know that it says that on the title but it's worth re-iterating.That said this is a very good text. The problem most people will face when teaching English is that unlike the science and maths the curriculum is not well specified. There are lots of phrases such as "students should learn to write creatively". I can totally agree with that as an aim of the curriculum but it doesn't help to specify what they mean but it does provide practical hints and advice on how to handle it in the classroom. It also usefully provides practical tips that might help with those students who do not engage with a task that is not well specified. This is an academic text so it is understandably rather dry in its presentation. The one annoyance I found is that some of the indexing is out, not by so much that I couldn't find what I wanted but enough to be an annoyance on a few occasions.Recommended for trainee teachers.

Comprehensive and instructive
As an accompaniment to studies for trainee teachers, this book has everything needed to help teach basics, providing prompts, examples and exercises to assist with learning and passing on knowledge of the English language. Its structure is logical and with over 300 pages of useful content, it is a fascinating study of the complexities of language. As a non-teacher, unfamiliar with teaching techniques, this book still has something to offer and I am enjoying working my way through the thought-provoking chapters. From a presentation point of view, the use of different font sizes and shading is helpful in distinguishing the various sections and help to divide the content into short chunks of study with breaks to consolidate learning and put it into practice with the exercises provided.A fantastic source of useful information in an easy to follow guide.

Excellent resource for educators
This comprehensive book, while occasionally dense, effectively employs common language in numerous examples to enhance understanding of teaching English. The book’s well-written content, intuitive layout, and abundance of examples make it an excellent resource for educators. However, the use of a hard-to-read sans-serif font in certain sections could be improved. Overall, I give it a full five stars!
