A Guilty Pleasure, but a Pleasure Nonetheless
Okay, I am not going to suggest this movie is fine cinema, exploring the human condition or exposing us to ideas that we would never have considered. No, this movie gives us a real-time 90-minute shoot-out between competing groups of losers in an abandoned factory somewhere totally unimportant. But it also gives us something well-written, well-directed, and well-acted. Armie Hammer and Sharlto Copely shine as self-absorbed losers plummeting (with a total lack of self-awareness) towards rock bottom. Cillian Murphy is outstanding as a loser who is aware that he is at rock bottom, but pretty sure things can still get worse. Brie Larson is convincing as a neckerchief-wearing loser who just wants a win for once in her life, but has only the dimmest idea of what a win might look like. The entire ensemble is amazing in convincing you that this irrelevant shoot-out is the inevitable culmination of each of their lifetimes of poor decisions.Functionally a paean to the maxim that violence is the last bastion of the incompetent, the movie leavens itself with snappy dialogue, fun soundtrack choices, and dark humor that lightens the atmosphere and keeps things moving. The violence, while graphic, is not uber-graphic.You won't find Peckinpah- or Tarinto-esque violence porn, but parental guidance is suggested. Not quite a Pulp Fiction, it is a better movie than Reservoir Dogs. If you didn't like either of those movies, than this probably won't be for you either. If you like heist movies featuring uber-competant protagonists (Ocean's 13, The Italian Job, et. al.), than this doesn't deliver that either. But if you can watch a movie where it is virtually impossible to find a side to root for because everyone is such a disappointment, and yet end up sort of loving them all because they are so pathetic, you might just enjoy this offering.

Worth a Watch but wouldn't pay for it
I don't know how shootouts could be boring, but this movie gives it a shot (pun intended). This film is good for something brainless to watch during dinner or similar activity. Instead of so much light banter they could have used that time to build the backgrounds of the various characters and how it came to be that they all were involved in the deal. Instead we're just left with questions and assumptions. It's worth a watch or two but you won't find any deeper meanings by viewing it more. Should be 3 stars, but I'm a fan of this genre so that gave it an extra half star automatically. LOL

A Dog in Search of a Reservoir
Twenty-five years ago Quentin Tarantino burst on the scene introducing cinematic epics that fused stylized action with crackling dialogue and unique story structures. With the success of "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" ultimately there were copycats and most of these efforts fizzled out. With the passage of time director Ben Wheatley attempts to pay homage to Tarantino's groundbreaking work. He fails miserably. There is no palpable tension on display and the action is tedious. The characters are forgettable and the dialogue unmemorable. Setting it in Seventies Boston is ultimately pointless and the John Denver tunes on the soundtrack do not provide any ironic commentary to the activity on screen. A complete dud. Martin Scorsese is one of the producers of this dreck and arguably this may be the most dubious entry in the canon of his storied career.

The standard that all other dark comedy action movies should aspire to.
Love this movie. Light on plot but heavy on characters - it's non-stop craziness with possibly the most realistic shoot out ever filmed. This is like a fun version of Reservoir Dogs without the pretentious coolness - depicting a bunch of bad guys, each unique in their characterization, bungling their way through a criminal endeavor gone wrong. It's great. The Blu Ray extras are OK, with a half hour or so behind the scenes video.

If you liked Reservoir Dogs, this is a must watch.
I think this movie didnt get the attention because of the issues with Armie Hammer. However, this is an extremely well written and produced movie that will make you feel like you watched Reservoir Dogs on steroids.Definitely worth watching at least 2-3 times to pick up on everything in it.

Spoiler free review.
The reason why some people do not like this film is because there is no story...Seriously. There is none, but that's not what this movie intended to deliver. This movie is a dark comedy with great dialogue and scenes, and is one giant cluster**** of misfortune. It's a no brainer thrill ride that'll have you laughing through all the quips and gunfire the characters throw at each other!

Odd but entertaining
Have never in my life watched a movie with this amount of activity that took place in one building basically. If you watch it you will see what I mean. We enjoyed it. Action, sarcasm, good cast, different kind of story line. Was not a bad way to spend an evening at home.
