Q: will this block hold thin 5000 grit paper for wet saning without losing it's grip?

Not sure, this is designed for woodworking. The ends are slotted horizontally so when you open an end, you push the sandpaper in as far as it goes. It has tacks embedded in the upper slot that grab the paper when you release the base. The rubber keeps the paper tight. As long as your 5000 grit is durable & thick enough, it should work on flat surfaces.

Q: How is this block different from the cheaper (black rubber) 3M block?

The 3M 03148 Black sanding block uses hook and loop sand paper attachment. The 05519 block uses regular sheets of sand paper that "clip" into the slots.

Hi, I'm not sure why you ordered black and received a colour. I'd recheck your order, go through everything on order, making sure that it does say 3M Rubber Sanding Block 9292 which is black. And if your order tells you this, return and ask for the correct order and colour. If not, I'd still send back for a refund and re-order the correct one. I hope this helps you.
