insane amounts of thermal throttling basically unusable at all for gaming
I had this laptop for about three years now, however quickly switched to a new one after a couple of months of use. This laptop thermal throttles like crazy, and no matter what you try to do it won't fix it. You can use it for gaming for 5-10 minutes until it starts thermal throttling so bad to the point where my fps would drop from a consistent 200 to 30 fps, basically unplayable, and personally I 100% would not recommend buying this laptop at all. Hundreds of better options for this price point.

Okish. But thermal throttles hard.
Background: I've had this laptop for over 6 years now. And it's paid its due for what it was worth. Can't complain at this point to be honest, since it's dell at the end of the day, it's built like a brick....outhouse. It's build to last. But that's about it.Cooling: The heat sink design on this series is particularly inefficient. It basically spreads the heat all over the laptop before reaching the two vents. And when it gets hot, you will definitely know, lol. A friend of mine used to call it the "finger toaster 9000" for a reason. It's not a recent development either by any means. I remember the very first week of getting this laptop and running into throttling at 80% usage. Despite changing the thermal paste, there was no difference. Same with raising it to ensure excess air flow.Maintenance: Opening it seem simple enough, but only if you want to access the ram sticks or the HDD. It you want to clean the fans thoroughly, it'll take 3-4x longer. You basically have to pull apart the entire thing to reach the other side to access the heat sink and the vents.Portability: The portability of gaming laptops is mostly a myth. From shorter battery life, heavier and larger frames; none of which make these ideal for placing them on your lap or carrying around in a bag whatsoever. So instead, just get a lighter laptop for school/work instead for much cheaper. All in all, if I could go back in time, I'd definitely make a custom desktop instead for the same budget and get much more use out of it. And get a much lighter, cheaper and sleeker laptop for school and work.
