A too long too laboured read
I was prepared to love Somewhere Beyond the Sea even before it was written. Its prequel, The House in the Cerulean Sea, is one of my all-time favorite reads. Despite the mixed reviews SBTS received, I had to read it for myself—and sadly, it turned out to be a letdown. It had its positives of course. The children were adorable. Arthur and Linus’ chemistry was on point and Klune’s humour shines through in bits. And yet it wasn’t a story with a heart. It seemed forced and little ‘extra’ on all counts — extra emotion, extra preaching even the fantasy element felt extra. The narrative was the same as that in the Cerulean Sea and the greys were all gone, replaced by stark black and white characters. It was a bit too long, a bit too laboured.
