Close to Pencil Perfection
The Kuru Toga Dive is an innovative mechanical pencil with some standout features, but it falls short in certain areas. Its auto lead sliding mechanism is designed to feed lead as you write without the metal pipe touching the paper, which is a great concept. However, even at the maximum setting, I found the lead didn’t advance quickly enough to keep up with my writing speed using HB lead. The pencil’s build quality is another drawback. For the $75 I paid (even at a discount), the hard plastic shell feels underwhelming—an aluminum or metal barrel would have been more appropriate for this price range. That said, the magnetic cap mechanism, which auto-ejects lead when unsheathed, is a neat touch that adds to its appeal. This pencil is best suited for short strokes and general writing rather than drawing or shading, as the lead mechanism struggles with cursive or continuous strokes. While I appreciate its clever design and features, I wouldn’t pay more than $50 for it in its current form. A future version with a metal barrel and improved lead advancement would be worth a higher price tag.
