Surprisingly good!
When I bought this, I had been just about ready to purchase an attachment for my hydraulic log splitter to enable me to make kindling. However, this is so much simpler and IT WORKS!!Sure, there's a sharp bladed sure you need to keep children away (there is a nut & bolt to hold the blade closed) but its a really good solution for making kindling from logs and bits of wood up to about 12-14" long. The included gloves are free and as such, are very average. I'd get something thicker and heavier. I use my chainsaw gloves. Just a personal thing. If you've an electric impact driver, you'll find fitting the supplied wall bolts a lot quicker and easier. The spanner works, but its slow and quite hard.I recommend this. It's well made and works very well. Treat yourself!

Blade
Could be a bit sharper

Decent for very small bits of wood
Whilst I am aware this is for kindling, you really have to get the wood to a very small size before using this. Otherwise the blade will bend. Besides that it’s an ok item, I don’t think it’s worthy of the price tag, glad I have this one, wouldn’t buy another.

Effortless firewood prep for cosy nights in
I began using this wood splitter, and it's made preparing firewood an absolute delight. Picture this: a chilly evening, my little ones wrapped snug in blankets, waiting for the fire to roar in the living room. This tool’s extendable handle design is brilliant. With its securely mounted wall setup, it feels incredibly sturdy, a comfort when I’m working alone while the kids play. Just lifting the column, placing the log, and bringing down the blade feels effortless, no axes or hammers needed! The safety aspect is a huge relief, knowing I don't have to worry about anything flying off or getting wobbly.Installing it was surprisingly straightforward with our household drill, and since then, it’s been a joy to use. I even managed to split various sizes and shapes of wood, thanks to the adjustable handle. Whether it’s soft pine for a quick fire or a sturdier piece of oak for a longer burn, it handles it all. The fireplace has never been warmer, and family nights have become an even bigger hit.

It works well once you have it set up correctly and get the knack.
It does actually work but it takes a bit of setting up and learning to get it to operate well. You can see it screwed to a post in my barn and once set up was very stable. You will need to drill the positions of the screws and use a spirit level to make sure it is correctly lined up.I used a socket set to screw the supplied screws in rather than the tool provided. You will see a small pile “before” and “after” of some Ash we have just cut from dead Ash trees. These were split into smaller sections using a full size electric log splitter and used this kit to turn some of it into kindling which is why I bought it.The Ash is pretty tough and so it look a bit of getting used to but once you learned the best way to use it then it became easier to use.It would not deal with bigger pieces and did need the extended length arm and a bit of muscle to get it to work. Thanks to finding some on line tips I got the knack and got on well and will continue to use it.How it compares with similar units I cannot tell but I suspect no massive difference.Summary: 4 out of 5 as having some more detail on how to set it up and use it would be better and to make it clear it is for kindling not splitting logs. This is a genuine outsider purchaser and review.

manual kindling log splitter
This is a heavy weight log splitter. It arrives with some hefty looking bolts to fix it to a wooden support, either vertical or horizontal and I can see this would enable you to use a lot more force and be safer. We tried it out without attaching it to anything, not ideal. It wasn't until we had ordered it that we realised that all our strong uprights in our wood store are metal, so we need to think again. It is suggested it can be placed outdoors but I cannot see this is a good idea. Ours was already showing signs of rust on arrival so think somewhere undercover would be more suitable. We have tried it with a few logs as is. It is possible to exert quite a lot of force without attaching it to a wall but even so we noticed, screwing in the second bar extension, the thread was rusty and hard to screw in, so we plan to oil this before trying again as it probably won't come apart if left too long.We tried numerous shapes and sizes or logs, and only once actually managed to split anything, it was rather disappointing. However, it is worth noting the wood we were using had already been split into logs for our wood burner for the winter and is dry, having been under cover for at least 12 months, so may not be a fair trial. In November we have numerous trees being felled so will have fresh timber to experiment with, and by then hopefully we will have found a suitable place to attach it securely.Right now though we will continue as before with our electric log splitter and make our kindling that way, it is much easier, effortless in fact and the manual wood splitter offers little to tempt us to use it instead. I will report more in November when we have some fresh logs to experiment with. Until then we give it 3 stars as we can see it could be useful if you do not have access to an electric splitter but it does seems expensive.

Excellent bit of kit!
Excellent quality log/kindling splitter! If you have a wood burner and process your own logs and kindling this is an excellent addition to the tools needed to get the job done. The splitter is well made from thick gauge steel. The handle length is perfect for getting good leverage to split smaller logs and wood into kindling.Very easy to use either on the floor or attached to wall with the provided fixings.Overall fantastic bit of kit for the money and far safer that swinging an axe!
