Cure it, set and salsa/guacamole!
I've had mine that my father purchased and cured for me 45 years ago. My mom's is about 60 years old. I purchased this one for my stepdaughter. It's the perfect size and was received very well bundled in bubble wrap and in one piece, both mortar and pestle. I cured the lava rock mortar and pestle by grinding rice and salt, rinsed, ground rice, salt and garlic, rinsed, like 5 times; excessive, but I wanted to get it right. It made its way safely from Chicago to Georgia.Making sure it is lava rock and made in Mexico, and cured well, will give great results in smoothness, salsa, and guacamole, for many years. Concrete molcajetes are nice, but is said they don't cure as well as lava rock. When you get one, be sure to watch the many available videos on curing a molcajete before using.

It is a large size!! HEAVY Volcanic Rock and made in Mexico!!
I am very happy with this product. I did not expect it to be this large or heavy and I wanted a nice, big authentic Molcajete to make salsas and guacamoles in!!I began seasoning it when I received it a week ago so this photo is after open fire pit seasoning from my cast iron pan, having been oiled twice with olive oil, and finally having been cured in the oven once so far at 400. The black is already ingrained and won't rub off onto my hands, so it is definitely real volcanic rock basalt and had a MADE IN MEXICO sticker on it. Order this Molcajete it is very satisfying, you will definitely not be dissapointed!!Since Wednesday I have been preparing it for its first use with some brown rice (back when Mocajetes were all households had white rice didn't exist) which ground down to a very fine powder twice and then seasoned first with onion and garlic skin followed with Chiles de Arbol, clove of garlic, some bay leaves, and a little coarse sea salt and fresh oregano from my garden and it smells amazing so far!! I cannot wait to use it to make some salsa.

Nothing compares to the real thing
Have used this now for more than a year.... Even just sitting on my counter top it gets noticed with it's natural beauty,.. makes excellent salsas and other things. The more I use the better it gets. I use it a few times a week and every weekend.

Seems legit
I’ve not used it a lot yet, but it seems legit, That is, it seems made of lava. The feet are pretty rough, so it may scratch some surfaces. I put some liquid rubber (for coating tool handles, etc.) on the feet and that seems to work fine.

Authentic Mocajete
I recently took a Mexican cooking class in Mexico and they used a lava rock Mocajete for many of the dishes we made. This one has a good sized bowl that is deep enough to make guacamole with 4+ avocados. My instructor said it is important to get a genuine lava rock mocajete - not another material - for authentic results. Enjoy!
