Van Gogh: His Life and Works in 500 Images: A Global Perspective

Decent book on Van Gogh and his paintings
A good book on Van Gogh containing a reasonably detailed biography and a wonderful gallery of his paintings. The biography is divided into about 50 two-page chapters, each describing a particular aspect of the artist's life from his time in England to his last days in Auvers; each chapter also includes a painting or two related to the chapter. The gallery contains about 500 paintings, divided into five sections related to the different periods. Each painting is associated with an excellent short commentary. The gallery is fantastic and the makes the book worth the buy.The biography is decent. But given that it is about Van Gogh, I wish the writing style was a bit sentimental. And also the biography ends abruptly with the suicide of the artist, with only a short chapter on the posthumous details. I wish this was expanded a little more covering the artist's influence on the subsequent evolution of art and also details about the history of the paintings after his death. A timeline would have been useful as a reference.Overall a good book on Van Gogh and his paintings.

A must for any Van Gogh fan
Excellent quality images representing every major period from the artist's career. 500 images certainly takes some effort to memorise and each one has an impressive description and back story as to their creation, the techniques and the influences which Van Gogh encountered in their creation. Not a hardcover but e quality fine print and binding is excellent and this book is wonderful as a general reference to the artist and his works. Every major piece is covered and you get a real feel for the progression in the artist as a painter and as a man.

Vincent book a must
I love Vincent's work and have sometimes used his paintings in painting classes. This is not a coffee table art book but a sweep across the whole of his work. Excellent for the art lover who cannot afford big heavy art books.
