The kinesthetic science of judo
I began to get interested in judo through author Steve Scott's YouTube channel, The Welcome Mat, which features step-by-step lessons in judo, sambo and jujitsu techniques, judo philosophy, and practical theories of movement. I am too old and busted up to take up the sport of judo, but I do teach martial arts and self-defense, and this book helped me immeasurably. There were key concepts that Coach Scott outlined in his book that gave me a greater understanding of many techniques that I learned in traditional Japanese jujitsu and hapkido. I own many more of his books, and all of them are dense with minute breakdowns of specific skills and comprehensive explanations. This one in particular could be used as a textbook in a kinesiology course, as it clearly delineates the science of movement that is so critical to judo.

Highly recommended
Steve Scott does a phenomenal job of breaking down the technical aspect of Judo in laymenâs terms. Highly recommended for anyone that wants to elevate their skill level as a Judokan.

This is a must have
Just a few pages in, I knew this work was special. Steve Scott has a masterful ability of articulating ideas that others find difficult to express, then leading us into those ah-ha moments of realization. His depth and breadth of knowledge of the culture, philosophy, mechanics and application artfully combine with his ability to atomize concepts. His instructional prowess has produced a classic that every instructor and upper level student must read - and re-read. Not just for the grappling arts, the value of this book far exceeds its price. Thank you, Steve!

An Important Book for Students of Judo
Steve Scottâs Judo Advantage focuses on Judoâs principles of movement. Reading the book pushed me to examine my own use of kuzushi; think about how I handle/utilize space in randori; and underlined the importance of controlling the corners âshihoâ of my opponent. I would recommend this book for Kyu ranks (like myself) who want to build a solid base/framework to think about movement in Judo. This is one of those books you underline and take notes in and then revisit it in a few years.

an example for other martial arts authors to aspire to
I have many martial arts books, and I must say that this book is one of the most densely packed with information. Much of the information presented is specific to the sport of Judo, but the author goes so in-depth on the subject that I'm sure martial artists from other styles will take away something valuable from this book. In short, this one of the best books on martial arts I have ever read, and I don't even practice Judo.

This is a great resource for Judo teachers!
Steve Scott presents a simple yet profound approach to teaching the principles of Judo that will give all martial artists an advantage in their art and sport competition as well as in life. As a judo Sandan and Jiu Jitsu black belt I find it not only confirms what I know works but also adds to my arsenal of teaching tools and reminds me of the important concepts of judo and why it works.

Excellent Condensed Summary of the Physical Mechanics of Judo
I recommend this book to any player or coach of Judo. There is a wealth of information concerning the mechanics of the art packed into a fairly quick read. I found myself doing a lot of highlighting for future review.

Ottimo libro!
Consigliato!

Below par book
This is not a very good book. It suppose that have groundbreaking techniques but in reality really does have that many if at all. Not much detail about techniques. Far to repetition over all. Did learn much from it. Would not recommend.

Judo for those who want to understand the science that backs it
Splendid rendition into how judo works and you are a total fan wish as Myself who loves the human chess aspect of judo and how do manipulate and understand movement much like in jui jistu , this is a must read for a judoka who wants to understand the principles and concepts behind this beautiful art created by KanÅ and continues to develop. There is nothing like judo , when you get the movement right and score ippon be it in randori or competition ! Mastering this Art is my life long goal which itself is not possible because there is always more to learn and that what makes it so beautiful.

Great technical book on why judo works!
This book details the key judo fundamentals and why they work. For me it also explains why my judo technique is not working! It offers good easily understandable explanations and diagrams so you don't need to be an expert in science or engineering to get what the authors point is. This is the book I was looking for to get my techniques better. Many books are aimed at what the throw looks like and basic points - however this book helps you understand why it works and shows what you should concentrate on to get it better. This is a great book for anyone who has the basics, but often finds it hard to execute the throws while on the move in Randori (like me).

Not a great book.
I love Steve Scott's stuff on Youtube and I am sure he is a great coach but this book is more talking about Judo than about Judo, perhaps I had expectations for it to be something like what he has on Youtube but I found it disappointing and I have never read it again. I have lots of other material on Judo and Jiu Jitsu and unfortunately this added very little to that collection.
